Will it be possible and worth using both an HD6870 and R9 280 together? If it's not possible, it doesn't matter if it's worth it or not, obviously, but I'm curious whether it would even be worth it to pair a card that's about half as fast with the R9 280, especially considering it would nearly double the power requirements.

7950, 7970, 280, 280x are going to be the only cards that you could crossfire with AFAIK.

Probably wouldn't be worth it even if you could crossfire with a 6870 just because of the speed difference.

Sell the 6870 and use the extra money towards a 290.

The extra money towards the 280 will be welcome. I never buy top of the line cards... performance per dollar just doesn't line up, even the 280 is at the high end, but I got it on sale with rebate for $200. Hopefully will arrive this week.

Fair enough. It'll be a good upgrade all by itself.

In case it wasn't clear, no they won't crossfire together. You'll enjoy that 280 though. They overclock quite well too

You could also likely crossfire your R9 280 with a 7870 XT (which uses the same Tahiti or 7950 chip, and not the actual 7870 chip).

I don't have a 7870 or a 7850, though. If I were buying a Crossfire setup, I'd just buy two of the exact same card. I was just curious if I could use my old card to give a 25-50% performance boost over the R9 280 by itself.
