So I know we've got a lot of crossfit advocates around here so I figured this would be a good place to ask. There is a 'box' that is associated through my University and they charge considerably less than most boxes and have the option of 1-2 classes a week for like $30/mo(for students) which is still expensive but much more manageable for me than 150+/mo like most others are.

My question is would doing crossfit maybe once or twice a week with my other routine and BJJ worth it? it would effectively take out my only 'rest' day on Saturday and normally I count Fridays as rest too because we do more high level BJJ stuff in the gym and not many people show up so if anything it's a warm up an hour of technique then maybe 30 min of sparing and this varies depending on how many people show up, sometimes we don't spar at all, but it's considerably less active than the rest of my week.

I've recently added three or four days of cross-fit to my regular powerlifiting routing. For me, I'm trying to get weight down, so I use the cross-fit to reduce the amount of running I do (wear and tear on the knees plus getting boared running). I can get a really crazy sweat going with a 20-30 minute crossfit workout - to get the same effect running would take more than an hour. Not sure how that translates to real calories burned, but my perception is that crossfit is a much more efficient workout, so for my lunch hour workout it's the way to go.

I know nothing about Jiu Jitsu and the muscles worked, but I know for me the crossfit helps a lot with working my whole body, especially core. And the pullups, burpees and box jumps, other plyometrics have helped get my muscles working more explosively. So when I go for max weight, I feel like I've got more power as my muscle fibers are all working at the same time. (Sorry - I'm sure there are technical terms for this, I'm just a guy who lifts...)

Maybe you get all of this out of regular BJJ workouts already, but I think adding any workout to your routine would be helpful. Plus, you're a student - you don't need rest, you're young!!

i would definitely recommend you at least try it. the thing i would worry about though is whether or not you'd be getting enough rest. crossfit + bjj + other stuff is a lot of stress on the body and i would worry about getting injured.

...wear and tear on the knees...

...burpees and box jumps, other plyometrics...

Just sayin .

Anyways, OP, if you'd enjoy it, then sure. And as long as you don't stay tired by adding it in--but I'm sure you know how that goes. If you're able to, it's always a great idea to surround yourself with like-minded people and coaches who encourage you to make progress (even if you're good at encouraging yourself). You can always try it for a month and see how it goes, yeah?

Many BJJ and MMA guys use Crossfit for their conditioning. John Hackleman (owner of The Pit, which trained Chuck Liddell and Court McGee) uses a modified version called CrossPit to good success. That said, you'll need to listen to your body. Crossfit by itself can be pretty tough to recover from, but if you only add a day or two a week as conditioning (and make sure your sleep is good and food is adequate) you should be okay. I'm not sure what your "other routine" is, but if it's anything like a bodybuilding-type split I would say drop it completely and do CF with some added powerlifting-style strength work (squats, deadlifts, and presses) on your usual gym days.

I'm a level 1 Crossfit coach who's been doing it for almost 4 years, so I'm assuredly biased, but I think it could work well for you.

My other routine is the Intermediate Madcow 5x5 which has been slightly modified to meet my demands. I've got a log here with about 500 posts

I think I'll go sign up for it sometime next week, this weekend I'm competing so no point in signing up when I can't train the first weekend.

Thanks for the input guys
