Crossover Cable

Hi

I'm setting up a homenetwork. The website I'm using as a guide to set it up says I must use "Crossover UTP (10baseT) cable" and "UTP (10baseT) cable."

I found an old network cable that says Category 5 on its side; I guess it's a Cat5 cable. Is it a crossover cable? Will it work on my network?

Cat5 just has to do with the amount of wires in it. The crossover has to do with what order the wires inside are on the RJ45. Go buy the jacking gun and 100 feet of cable and make your own. It's "LOTS" of fun.

Ok so In a straight-through cable, wires 1, 2, 3, and 6 at one end of the cable are also wires 1, 2, 3, and 6 at the other end. In a crossed cable, the order of the wires change from one end to the other: wire 1 becomes 3, and 2 becomes 6.

wasert, let me be the first to answer the question, its probably just straight cat5 since crossover usually says it. cat 5 is the type. its fine for waht you need and is pretty much the standard to use. cat5e and cat6 are the only ones better but cat5 is fine and very applicable to what you are planning.

however you might want to double check by looking at the wires in the plugs. if they are in the same order in both ends, then its straight, if some of the wires are switched then its a crossover.

i'd suggest to try to avoid using crossover cable since its easier to have all straight cable in case you need to replace it.



and yes you can make your own cable, and its not that hard, plenty of wire order guides on the internet.
