crows smarter than humans?

I get how crows might quickly learn to do this for a reward, but I don't understand how they initiated the process of teaching them. How did they get the first crow to do it for the first time, in order to learn there was a reward?

The documentary I saw a few years back showed them dropping nuts in the crosswalk of an intersection when traffic lights stopped the cars and the walk sign came on. They flew back to their perches and waited for cars to crack the nuts, then the lights would change and they'd fly back down to get their food. It was pretty neat because that's a multi-step process there with visual queues.

Compared to humans, think about how many women can't successfully back out of their garage without hitting the door in the morning. It's basically the same thing.

I saw an article years ago about reported sightings of crows actually smoking discarded lit cigarettes. It seemed to be undocumented and the publication was asking for photographs to back up the stories. This might have been Omni magazine, which was all caught up in asking for photos of ball lightning.

They're smart, they've been shown learning to utilize or even "make" their own tools, like the traffic nutcrackers. Smarter than even the avg dipshit human though, I'd find hard to believe.

Ravens might be more likely, they're more intelligent than crows.

Working for an IT call center years ago, I had a coworker that used to say that all the time... I'd get off the phone with someone that just didn't understand anything technical (typically a district sales manager) and I can still hear his voice saying in a soft tone, "Kinda makes you wonder how they got out of the garage in the morning doesn't it?"

I get that, I'm surprised a lot of people can walk and chew gum at the same time.

I just think stupidity is an equal opportunity affliction gender-wise.

They actually are pretty smart. The MNR did a study on how crows have a high success rate eating road kill without getting hit by cars, more success than any other animal. Turns out they always have a lookout to check for traffic while another crow is eating other road kill. They will occasionally switch spots so they can all eat. One interesting thing they found though is crows did get hit by motorcycles sometimes. Turns out because of the biology of their voice box, they can yell car car car but they can't yell motorcycle.
