CRT Question: Is this normal?

I bought a Samsung CRT (19" flat screen) model 997DF. I'm very satisfied with it but I noticed the text on the very edges, in about a 1 inch border on the left and right sides of the screen (from the edge of the screen to one inch in) the text is slightly blurry. Still very legible, just not as sharp as the text after that mysterious border. Certainly not a horrible thing, but now that I have noticed it it is driving me crazy. I went to Best Buy and looked at the same model on display there, and the monitor there also displayed this phenomenon. Is this typical in CRTs? I notice it most with black text on a white background. Someone in another post had commented how the quality of CRTs has fallen since LCDs are more mainstream so I'm wondering if it's a product of that trend. Thanks in advance. Aside from that strange thing, I love the monitor. For under $180 US it was a steal.

I had exactly this problem (among several others) on three defective, recently manufactured (01/05) Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070SBs that I went through about a month ago. My current one however, manufactured a year ago (06/04), does not have any such issue. Definitely a result of poor quality control in recent months, and probably on Mitsubishi's part with the tubes seeing as so many recent Diamondtron based monitors have the same problems. It really sucks that they are turning the best monitors out there into crap with this sort of nonexistent QC. It would have been better if they had stopped production much longer ago instead of flooding the market with these bad ones for a few months and then discontinuing them, which is what has happened (might be harder to find but at least you would know you're getting a good one).

no probs on my dell 19in crt.......i guess the QC is going downhill as they are having to sell crts cheaper and cheaper as the price of LCD/TFT falls.....so they are letting through ones that in the past they might have binned...

Play around with the settings a bit. Try moving around the centering then readjust the sharpness, convergence. etc. and check if the edges clear, also degauss it. If nothing there works, install the newest drivers and software from samsung's site and play around with the software that lets you calibrate settings and colors under different lighting conditions. Try a new vga cable if you have a spare. Chances are it's poor quality control, but can't hurt to try.

that is the problem with crt monitors, as the electron gun aims directly at the center of the screen and gives its sharpest clarity, so when it goes at an angle on the screen it might get blurry. i have the same problem. high quality ones dont' do it that badly.
