I LOVED my CRT back in the day, then switched to a 19" Widescreen LCD and was extremely dissapointed in the dithered colors and ghosting.

I purchased a Vizio 32" LCD Tv and am now using that as my monitor......

It's a HUGE difference. Tv's use an 8-Bit Color panel as opposed to the 6-Bit panel on most computer LCD's and it's night and day difference.

The colors in my games are now vibrant and crisp as opposed to looking washed out on my 19" LCD.

Ghosting and tearing also seem to be fine now too. From now on, i'm spoiled and will stick to my LCD TV monitors.

DIAMONDTRON tube FTW!!!! You have the pinnacle of IQ. My local Best Buy sells Vinyl Records in the store. Sure it's a niche market, but people do buy them. I WISH some company would put out new 24" wide screen CRTs. I'd pay $700 for one without a second thought if I could get it NITB. There is a market out there for CRTs but no company will do shit about it If I win the lotto I will start this company.

TN panels utterly dominate the affordable market. But every once in a while you get a couple 8 bit gems that show up like the ones in my sig.

I held on as long as i could because i couldn't stand the false contouring, banding and low color palette of the early 6 bit TN's.

False contouring and color banding are the biggest disappointments in the digital (plasma, lcd, dlp) display age. It like going back 15 years in gaming and dealing with it all over again..

That is why some of us didn't discard our 21" Trinitrons...I never understood gamers that liked a slim/thin screen...over image quality..."error, error, error...does not compute"...

And enthusiast even less...watercooling, massive case, multi-GPU..and then they go retard on the display...WFT?!

A few years ago my P275 moved to the left, and a BenQ FP241W became my primary.

I keep an eye on BenQshopper.com, they often come in stock refurbished for $275. For that price, it's impossible to beat. It's an MVA with a fraction of the ghosting of, for instance, a 2408, and calibrated, it has similar color accuracy.

I would have considered a 2209WA as a good replacement too.

Not to mention the 60hz refresh rate. I regularly play older games that can sustain 100+ fps, and there is a big difference in smoothness between that and 60fps. It's good that we are now seeing a few LCDs that do 120hz, but the problem is those LCDs are otherwise mediocre. The DLP TVs I mentioned earlier look more attractive.

True, nothing beats 16x12 @ 100Hz or 10x7 @ 150Hz. When I made the move to Windows 7 64-bit, I actually ended up making a custom monitor driver so I could use all the available refresh rates.

I only really went LCD because I wanted widescreen in games and there were no cheap widescreen CRT monitors.

I loved my NEC CRT, and wailed when it finally died. Then I bit the bullet and went and got a 22" Samsung and have never looked back. It's fast enough for gaming, sharp and gorgeous (using a DVI connection). I'd never use a CRT again.

I picked up the HP LP3065 and it's great. Gaming at 2560x1600 on 30" is awesome.

LCD's suck and I have two of the best there is. A NEC 20WGMX2 and NEC 2490WUXi. There is no getting around blur. For example when roaming around in Titan Quest holding x to see items on the ground the text is blurry when moving and crystal clear on CRT. Then you have input lag which is much higher on LCD's sometimes 3 frames. I dream of the day we move off LCDs but it won't happen due to cost, LCD are commoditized now costing almost nothing compared to competing technologies.

My advice is look into LCD thread stickied. Or just buy NEC 'I' series, the best, most CRT like in viewing angles and color and don't game.

LCD are superior in static images, power consumption and low light profile.

Are you claiming 120Hz stop motion blur? They don't try dragging a window full of text around your screen you'll see it blurry vs. CRT. To get unblurry you need three orders of magnitude faster response (like a CRT) before eye no longer notices blur. I've tried the Samsung not to mention it's looks like crap when viewed off angle at all.

I'm still on the fence here. The focus on my A7217A (HP 24" widescreen CRT, basically a FW900) has stabilized, so I am not having to tweak it every couple of weeks, but it still isn't as sharp as it should be.

Someone mentioned replacing the screen is all you need to do to have a good as new CRT. I have to disagree with that. There are TONS of other components inside these CRTs that create all the voltages and timing signals needed to drive the electron guns. Capacitance changes with time and even the specs on transistors can and will change. Heck, I have a Sony FV-36FS10 down stairs that has an issue because a pair of transistors in the power supply are drifting out of spec. I could fix it, but this 236 pound monster needs to GO!

I keep hoping that if I wait long enough, someone will come out with a FANTASTIC monitor that I can afford... I still want a cold cathode (aka: SED) monitor! I just hope I live long enough to see these things come out.

Well, I just bit the bullet. Dell had a $100 off sale on the U2410, which was the monitor I was most leaning towards. It should be here late next week some time.

Me too: http://www.westinghousedigital.com/details.aspx?itemnum=56

I upgraded from ViewSonic P95F+ (19 inch CRT). The difference is night and day literally (the only thing worse on the LCD is blacks). Have been using the 37 inch LCD Monitor since 2008 without issues. There is no way I can give up a 37 inch LCD screen to an 18 inch viewable CRT for gaming, movies, excel work or internet browsing.

Also, let's not forget that CRTs lose brightness very quickly (and there is no backlight to manipulate to quickly increase the brightness level).

"If you're watching six hours of TV per day (quite normal for a household), it'll be 28 years before the LCD TV's brightness begins to dim to half the original level." http://www.flatpaneltv.org/article/...n-of-plasma-lcd-and-other-flat-panel-tvs.html

For $600, the Dell U2410 comes to mind. 1920x1200, IPS-panel, heard nothing but good things about it. Had it at work for a couple of weeks and I liked it. I must say though, I don't like it that much, that I will pay $600 for it, compared to $280 for a decent TN-panel with the same specs.

But you're a CRT-snob, so go for it

On cnet i see a lot of people compaining about green and pink tinting on their brand new u2410.

It has a 3 fps input lag according to digitalversus . I am stuck with TN panels for this reason.

I saw this too. The thing holding me up (from upgrading from a bad condition Sony 24" CRT) is the lack of 120Hz, which I think I might want for 3D in gaming.

Frankly, it's been over two years since I seriously played any kind of quick FPS that required fast refresh to survive (BF2142). I tend to play a whole lot more single player RTS or 4R games these days and absolute perfect timing isn't nearly as important in what I am doing.

I AM doing a lot more programming these days (mainly AVR microcontroller stuff), so having small print that STAYS in focus IS a lot more important. We shall see how things work out in a week or so.
