Funny how most of these CRT "snobs" settled for crap LCD monitors. U2410 and up is the only way if one was truly a CRT snob.

I bought one of the most expensive 24"'s at the time and it was still laughable next to my CRT. Right now I have a cheap LCD because I'd rather be unhappy with a $200 24" than unhappy with a $700 24".

Bought a 22" ViewSonic VX2260WM LCD monitor. Then couple weeks later bought another one for duel LCD setup. Compare to my old CRT the LCD is a lot brighter and sharper.

Enjoy able to play movies on one lcd monitor. Then play a game on the other lcd monitor.

well in my case, my CRT was still going strong (was nearly new when I got it 2 years ago, top of the line NEC NF diamondtron). The only reason I ever wanted an LCD was a bigger size and aspect ratio (16:9 works fine for me), so 24'' didn't seem like much of an 'upgrade'. As I wasn't quite ready or able to spend gobbles of cash on a 30'' IPS + associated cost of a CF/SLI setup, I got me a 32'' IPS-Alpha TV instead.

In the end, I guess I was just cheap to a point after all

Excellent!!! That means I can continue to call myself a CRT "snob" because I DID order the U2410! It should be here tomorrow actually.

Of course, my A7217A is going to stay around here until I am COMPLETELY sure that I can live with a LCD day to day.

Where is my SED? Where is my OLED?? Where is my direct neural transmission so I don't NEED any kind of monitor???

Once I get the U2410 up and running, I'll update this thread with my thoughts on the transition.

I haven't gotten an LCD yet, but I plan to get either a Dell U2410 or a HP ZR24w. I will keep the 19" Mag V700 for my current computer, and get the 24" for the new one I am building. Seeing the CRT next to the laptop monitor makes me hope that my laptop just had a horrible LCD, as the difference is huge.

Well, I've been using this U2410 for a few days and I have some comments on it compared to my old A7172A (FW900) 24" CRT:

Pros:
a) Size - The monitor is MUCH smaller physically even though it is 1.5" wider diagonally viable.
b) "Focus" - As it is an LCD, there is no focus, so no focus to go out. Text (especially small text) is much clearer.
c) Color - The U2410 comes precolor calibrated from the factor (includes the calibration sheet for your monitor as well). I am VERY happy with the sRGB calibration and after going through the Win7 calibration routine (I know, not a full profession cal), I had to make very few adjustments to dial it in. I have no doubt that the color calibration is much closer than my old CRT was.
d) Weight - Let's see, 110lbs (aka: 50kg) versus something I carried into the house with one hand... The LCD wins hands down by an order of magnitude (not really, but it sure FEELS like when you lift each one!) Heck, the old CRT was actually bowing the desk down in the center until I modified the hutch so I could push the monitor further back, which moved more of it's weight directly over the vertical back support.
e) Turn on time - The CRT takes a bit of time to turn on (electron gun has to warm up before it can emit the stream of electrons) and then it took another 20 to 30 minutes before EVERYTHING warmed up and the picture settled into it's best. This LCD fires right up and looks good almost instantly. I'm sure it too has some warm up issues, but they are SO much less significant than the CRT that they don't really appear as something you really see. Or at least something that I really see.
f) Room on desk - I am able to move the U2410 about 12" further back then the CRT. That frees up a LOT more room on my computer desk. I am able to reposition the keyboard and the mouse pad in better locations that make the ergonomics of my computer desk better. Plus, it makes it easier to clamp down my Logitech Momo Force wheel when I want to drive a few races.
g) Less energy - This U2410 still uses about 75w of power, but that is much less than the old CRT used. That will lead to less heat load in the room during the summer cooling months and hopefully a generally better temperature. Plus, using less power is always a good thing both financially and environmentally. This item played NO part in my decision to purchase this monitor, but it is still an advantage.
h) Screen - NO stuck pixes! No noticeable backlight bleeding. Very stable picture at assorted viewing angles, both side to side and up and down. That was one of the issues that has driven me nuts on TN panels, so I am glad to see that the IPS panels really are that much better in viewing angle performance.

Cons:
a) Slightly grainier text - The down side to having everything super sharp is the text appears more grainy than it every did on the CRT. I was expecting this as it is common on IPS panels and it was definitely the first thing I noticed (ok, the second thing. How light it was was the FIRST thing!).
b) My eyes definitely wasn't as happy with the LCD INITIALLY as it was with the CRT. Probably because I ran the CRT at 85 hz (same 1900x1200 resolution on both). It just had the "pulling" feel to my eyes that I didn't get on the CRT. Of course, by the third day, I no longer noticed it, so I assume my eyes got used to the LCD.
c) Pain - While carefully lifting the old CRT off my desk, I STILL managed to pull some muscles in my lower back! My back STILL hurts today! It REALLY pisses me off because I followed all the normal lifting rules (use legs not back, keep back straight, etc.) and I STILL messed my back up! I listed this as con to the LCD because had I NOT purchased it, I would never have moved the the CRT and my back would NOT be hurting today!

All in all, I am very happy with this LCD. Just the improvement in the desk ergonomics alone would make me very hesitant to go back to a CRT (assuming I could get a brand new FW900 in perfect working order). Bigger screen + smaller size is a very nice combination. I am glad I spent the money and bought a high quality LCD instead of saved money and went with a TN.

all i used for over six years were mitsubishi diamond pro CRT's (19" & 22") and once they both died off - i tried for several months to replace them with various TN, and even a couple of IPS panels as well... the only thing that comes close (that i found) and actually far exceeds both of my beloved CRT's was samsungs true 120Hz 2233RZ - by absolute far the best thing i found in a flat panel PC LCD. outside of that the only things i'd recommend are larger format TV's, but even then you've gotta be really careful before you buy, as obv returning a TV is a huge pain, and in fact, you can only find what i consider to be the best PC monitor; used, which would be a SONY A3000 SXRD (120Hz). imho, nothing atm, can do what these do in terms of flawless motion & zero input lag, and especially for the size 50" to 60", but there's also a huge downside to any rear view tech.... too many to mention briefly. the only other thing i'd prolly use would be a panasonic plasma, again for supurb overall PQ, and you can get a 42" with all the bells and whistles for under $700

I'm actually in a similar boat. My FW900 is dieing. I've found another one for sale, in claimed very good condition, for $250. Best alternative I see is the new HP ZR24w which is selling for ~$425. Of course I'd be getting a brand new display with a warranty and 1.5" more viewable area, but man do I love my FW900...

I'm with you on the FW900. It's just unfortunate that the things are hitting the end of their useful life due to components aging (caps anyone???). At least on mine, the picture tube is still in great shape. Part of that may be because I have my computer in a fairly dark room, so the brightness is always turned down which helps the CRT stay in good shape longer.

Good luck on your upgrade. I am happy with my choice.

Haven't bought an LCD yet. I'm guess I'm still snobbing on my 19" Trinitron and have a 2nd one to spare when this one dies.

Its a bit smaller than what you are used to, but I have never, ever, regretted the purchase of my NEC 20WMGX2. My only wish is that I could have two of them.

LCD's suck and I have two of the best there is. A NEC 20WGMX2 and NEC 2490WUXi. There is no getting around blur. For example when roaming around in Titan Quest holding x to see items on the ground the text is blurry when moving and crystal clear on CRT.

You see motion blur on your 20MGX2? That's odd. I consider myself extremely sensitive to motion blur, and I have never once noticed it on my 20WMGX2. For kicks I fired up titan quest to see if I could reproduce the problem you mentioned. Maybe its something with your monitor because I just don't have the same problem.

What you guys should do is place one of the best LCD's next to a good CRT and take a pic of the motion blur. I always wanted to do it but I never had an LCD that wasn't a cheapo one.

CRTs use a lot more juice. They are big and hulking and heavy and give off heat. The focus (I'm talking about text, and text is mostly what I care about) of a CRT is crap next to an LCD. Turn off that stupid text sharpening thing in Windows, all it does is blur things, I don't know what Microsoft was up to with that. I sold my 21" NEC/Mitsubishi a few years ago, having gotten a Samsung 19", which is still my main LCD. Someday I suppose I'll get a 22". I guess a CRT might be the thing if you're doing a lot of graphics, for the color (the guy who bought my 21" was into professional graphics, and he bought it for a 2nd display for his work, he had another one just like it), but I'm not into that. I'm color blind, anyway.

I actually have the Nanao F2-17ex CRT monitor I bought for about $1000 back in 1994 or so. At the time it was pretty much top of the line state of the art. I hooked it up a few months ago and for some reason it didn't display anything!
