What other downsides to buying a CRT monitor besides space?

Looks to me like i can get a brand new 17" CRT for like 90 bucks.

If space isn't an issue what other diffrences are there?

hm, i just switched from my 22" CRT to a 19" LCD (L90D+) and i couldnt be happier.

at first, i did not a LITTLE ghosting/blurring, but you soon get used to it. and now i would never go back to a crt, they seem so blurry to me now. LCD's are so crisp and sharp.

LCD's are more expensive though, but i think that CRT's are a dying breed and it would be slightly backwards to invest in one now. there is nothing to not like about the new LCDs

Easier to read, less eye fatigue. That alone is worth any price differential. I can no longer stand using a CRT for more than a few minutes, that's if I can even find a CRT around me.

An LCD will be a brighter picture with better contrast (which is why many find it easier to read), but a CRT will have clearer resolution and scale to different sizes far better (LCDs have only a single resolution that they function well at). So it all depends on your own viewing tastes and programs...

If you go to offtopic, you'll find another thread similar to this one. I'm going to state again my opinion, LCD's are the way to go!

The look better than CRT's, period, inside-out~

A sucky thing if anyone would agree with me, dead pixels, are a PAIN~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's pretty much it. A good mid-range CRT is superior to high-end LCD in every category, with the exception of footprint and weight. Cheap CRTs are...well...cheap.

heat, power consumption, reliability, safety, easier to carry to lanparties, or move from one place to another, resale value. The list goes on...

easier on the eyes, no fading. and yes less powre wasting. crt is dead to me..and with 19" lcd's costing litlte more than 200 now.. theres little reason to bother with anything else. 70 dollars spent on junk is 70 dollars wasted. 17" crt is a 16" lcd...

Opposite for me, I can't stand LCD screens, make my eyes hurt. In college we only have about 10 CRTs and the rest are LCDs so I have a limited selection CRT monitors are great!

The never ending debate, CRT Vs LCD.
OP, i think most who feel that CRTs were so bad never used a high-end CRT. A mid-range CRT won't cut it when a new LCD of quality is in the room. But a high-end CRT still is worth the having/using.

I use a Mit 2060u NF, bought used for $350+ship three+ years ago.. In 2000 it was rated as the best for graphics and text. I study History on-line, reading for hours. No eye strain at all but this unit refreshes at 100 no matter what the resolution is set at.

Friends come by and when this 70# monster comes out of stand-by they generally take a half step back in suprise of the rich color and true blacks. Thier mid-range LCDs don't even get close to the richness of color this unit offers.

The high-end CRTs can still be bought new. They are $600 to about $1500. Buying good used at $200 to $400 is where it is at.

Look here...azatek.com

If you double your $90 and buy gradeA used it would be worth it. Azatek does offer 19" lease pulls. I am very tempted to get another quality used CRT before they are gone.

I use a Sony G500 21" CRT at home and a 19" Dell LCD at work. They are both nice. The only reason I'd go from a good CRT to an LCD now would be for space saving reasons. A 21" CRT on a regular desk takes up a massive amount of space. Now, when Dell releases their 3007 LCD next year, I'm dumping my CRT.

Anyone have experiance in both CRT and LCD and is a gamer? LCDs seem nice but for games wouldnt the blurring ruin it, or is it barely noticeable?

A very large CRT is going to put out a lot of radiation and heat, and i wouldn't want that 2 feet from my face.

Have you tried a using a CRT?

Can anyone compare CRT gaming to LCD gaming?

I can't get 19' LCD for as little as 19' CRT
That's the only thing stopping me.

CRT's have many pluses. Such as such high resolutions and you also dont worry about ghostin on them easier. The thing with me is, now I have a samsung lcd, and I could never ever go back to crt as a main monitor. LCD's are much thinner and are very clear. Mine has never had a problem running games. It has a 16ms response time. When buying an lcd IMO stick with 16ms or less response time for gaming.

To me that isn't a separate category for the LCD Vs. CRT debate. You'll prefer one tech over the other for the same reasons, whether it's 2D or 3D, as long as you've got an LCD with a fast response time.

I like LCDs, and I use mine for most tasks. I have one grudge: colors are SOO unrealistic, and the only way you can get a true black is by turning the thing off. Whenever I want to work in Photoshop or crank up a dark game like Doom 3, I switch to the Trinitron and enjoy myself.

A decent S-PVA LCD w/ Overdrive should match any CRT in brightness and practically speed. Samsung 970P and ViewSonic VP930B are ones I can think of off the top of my head. Sure, you can be particularly susceptible to this blurring, but I don't think it's an issue for most people. Nor do LCDs emit X-rays. They are a lot more environment friendly and also have perfect geometry. Colors, while not QUITE as accurate, should be damn good with 8-bit LCDs. The only thing I'd worry about is the resolution limitations. Actually though, LCDs themselves are capable of higher pixel density than CRTs. Have you seen a 15.4" CRT with 1920x1200 resolution? LCDs for that exist on notebooks like one of Lenovo's. The reason such high reses don't reach desktops is because people sit back farther and it'd be so hard to see the text. I think scaling is fine with fixed aspect ratio. Black levels are generally decent these days. The reason CRTs have higher contrast is because of their lower black level. LCDs are still a lot brighter (1150 cd/m² measured). Even a $5000 AG CRT only reaches 100 cd/m² peak luminance at 9500K color temperature.

Now, as for resolution changing, that's the problem. Fortunately we can probably solve that by integrating faster ICs (thus better scalers). It's not really a problem with the panel itself. For now, I'd say scaling is only acceptable for older games. But that's just my LCD anyway.

Well, it depends on what you do. I play Quake 3 a lot, so LCD is not an option for me, just like it is not an option with ANY fast pace game (not that many really: Q3, Q4... UT, UT2k4... hmm... nothing else I can think of).
I once spent a night at my friend's house. He has a brand new machine: 7800GTX, 4800+, 2GB. I thought, "Man, are we gonna have fun!" However, just as I moved the mouse in Quake 4, I realised the weekend was ruined. The blur was not bearable for me. He has some kind of $400 Xerox 19 inch LCD (don't know about the matrix). I have 22 inch DELL CRT (Trinitron).
My other friend's LCD is even worse. But it is some cheap a$$ Compaq, so I won't even consider it.

So if you play CSS, BF2, FEAR, etc. LCD will be fine (as long as it's a decent one). If you work in Photoshop or you play fast pace games then CRT is the way to go.
