CRT vs LCD

My Viewsonic PF790 CRT is on the fritz (refresh won't hold) and I'm in the market for a new monitor. I have an L configured desk that has a LOT of room in the corner for a monitor (I could stick a 27" TV in there). So my question is if I want to spend about $350 should I stay with CRT or is there a good reason to go w/ LCD? Currently I'm looking at the Viewsonic VP930 LCD.

It seems to me that I have the space and would be better served getting a CRT since saving space isn't a big concern for me. Other than the size is there another reason to go w/ LCD?

I play a lot of games so refresh time is important and it seems I'll get a whole lot more bang for the buck staying w/ CRT.

That said...any good recommendations for CRTs in the $350 range?

Thanks

Get a CRT, we're trying to give them away in the FS/FT forum. You can't beat spending $0.

I used a 19" CRT for a while and loved it. After seeing my sisters 17" LCD a couple years ago(when LCD's was alot more expensive) I thought thats nice but not worth it price wise. After working on a BenQ FP91G+ 19" LCD and just getting my Viewsonic VA1912wb 19" widescreen I'll never look back at CRT's again. The size of CRT's doesn't bother me nore could I care less about LCD's being smaller. It's the quality of the picture you get over a CRT that won me over.

For the prices of LCD's nowadays I would go with LCD and wouldn't look back. If I had the extra funds I would have went with one of these(namely the viewsonic):

Generally, high quality CRTs seem to have superior image quality to high level LCDs. The only reason I can see to get an LCD is if heat, power consumption, or weight are important to you.

Some people suggest that LCDs are better for your eyes.

I would have never gotten an LCD a year or two ago. I think they still needed to be more refined and the price was to high. But now I just got a brand new one (and a new model that just came out) and I would never go back to CRT. Everything is just so much nicer looking. It's just crisper. And something about the size and being able to set it farther back that makes my whole desk area feel nicer too. And widescreen is awesome. Would never go back to a non widescreen.

I would say go somewhere like fry's electronics. They have a 30 day return policy. Get an LCD. If you dont like you can take it back. But I'm sure you'll be hooked after a day or two and wont want anything else and will keep it.

(I have the samsung 215tw)

I can play games for 6 hours straight on my friends LCD. I can do the same on my CRT but my eyes tire...not that it's ever really stopped me. LCDs do seem better for use over extended sessions.

yeah, I think that's true also. My eyes kind of hurt after looking at a crt screen too long.

If you get a CRT, make sure to get a flatscreened one. They look much better in my opinion (you usually have to go into the bigger sizes to find them)

I can't believe people are still wanting to stick with CRTs! I mean they are OK for some uses, but man...even some of the diehard CRT folks who said "We'll never switch to LCDs because they are so sloooow, I'm going to stick with my 90 lb. paperweight because I'm afraid of ghosting and smearing" have switched and say they'll never go back to CRTs.

I personally don't care what you get, but all I know is after having a Viewsonic 18.1" 25ms panel and my Dell 20.1" 16ms panel, I will never, EVER go back to a CRT. Not to mention my 32" LCD TV which, even though it has a slightly worse picture on regular cable, kicks my old 27" CRT TV's ass all over this planet for movies and HD gaming.

Go ahead and rack up all of the CRTs you want...cause in a few years LCDs will be so common it'll be hard to find a good CRT. They'll be as rare as a 60's Shelby Cobra, but probably not nearly as sought after!

I used to have a flat screen CRT. Two of them actually. Sitting in front of them for more than an hour made my eyes hurt. I now have a single LCD and I can (and do) sit in front of it all day with no problem. That alone has made me vow to never buy a CRT again.

all new builds, I will never suggest a CRT, they are outdated peices of bulky junk that are now ready to be tossed into wastelands. they make the home feel like there is a peice of 90's to it, it's the millenium for crying out loud...

for anyone that lives in the United States, I will only say this - the economy versus the world? you live in a nation where you should come first, why are you going to settle for a CRT over an LCD?

in the future, LCD's will be so dirt cheap because companies will find better ways to produce an LCD with even less flaws so that the manufacturing will become more perfected and new LCD's today will become as outdated as CRT's in due time. a magificent future is up ahead! all the way for LCD and plasma!!!

dump the CRT and never go back

I LOVE my Sony G500 CRT, but my room gets freakin' hot with this thing. The rest of my place is 71 degrees, while my computer room is quite a few degrees hotter. I'd also like to get something bigger (30" Dell). But if you are on a budget, don't care about the space issue, and don't mind the extra heat, a CRT provides for a really nice picture. My friend came over recently and commented how good the picture looked on my monitor compared to his LCD.

I spend almost all my days in front of my computer (I work on it). I am waiting on a 2407FPW from dell. can't wait to see the difference. I think space was the main reason I got it, and to watch movies and play PS2 games, it's great.

I don't agree that CRT's are better for games. My Viewsonic VA1912wb widescreen is awsome. I had a dell then a hansol 19 inch which can't hold a candle to the LCD.

It's personal preference. I've got a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070 SuperBright that I would not consider replacing with a LCD. Your problem will be finding a quality CRT new .

Thanks for all the feedback.

I'm not totally sold on staying with CRT...it's just that I thougth size was the only reason to go LCD. I am very curious about all the people having less eye strain w/ LCD. My 37 year old eyes could use a break.

Thanks for your opinions.

I don't think anyone has debated that.

That's great, but don't generalize. That statement leads people to believe that all LCDs have an inferior picture to your CRT. He could be just making a positive statement about your CRT because he feels sorry for you not being up with the times. I mean what LCD panel does he have? Not all of them are created equally!!!
