Crucial 256 MB Cl2 Ram- $89.24

Wow...I bought one 64MB stick from Crucial last year for the same price as a 256MB now!! I also paid for shipping..dang!!

i thought this was a good deal at $110 per stick, even better at $90, think i'll pick up even more. 640 megs here i come!

Sigh, and I paid $529 for a 16MB EDO 72-pin SIMM - 60ns even - from Micro Center way back in 1995 (I think it was 1995, forget exactly) to upgrade from a 486 that had a single 16MB SIMM to a Pentium 100 which required a pair of them.

If you had told me back then what 256MB of RAM would cost, I would have laughed at you.

So I'll said it now, in 2005 you will be able to buy 4GB of RAM for $25. There, I said it first...

Since it isn't 2005 yet, I'll buy another one of these DIMMs for now.

It will run at whatever speed you set them at. They with both run at PC100, or PC133, not seperate.

Now, if you set PC100 to run at PC133, it may or it may not work.

Also, your CAS timings may be off, one DIMM may do PC133 at CAS2 the other at CAS3. Lots of issues mixing RAM that way, quick way to build yourself an unstable system.

ahh crap. would i be better off just stickin with a 256MB stick of CAS2 PC133 or getting a CAS3 PC133 and running both at 100 for 384MB?

Get yourself a stick of 256MB PC133 CAS2, then sell your 128MB stick. Don't mix them if your other stict is not the same brand. Does it work sometimes, sure, it also doesn't work sometimes and the result is weird crashes, lockups, or other odd things.

I've been doing this too long to ever mix ram, be it type, manafacture, or speed. Generally I buy however much I need, then sell whatever is in the box. Trying to match them is like playing Russian Roulette.

You can saftly run the PC133 at PC100, you can sometimes run PC100 at PC133, but I don't recomend it. Yea, lots of people on this board do it, then lots of people complain that Windows is not stable. Well, my system never crashes (hasn't crashed in as long as I can remember, at least a year or two, why? I buy the best, never mix stuff, and don't overclock. (I'm no fun, am I?) (My system used to crash when I bought on price. When I switched to buying on quality, that stopped, then again I also reinstall every year and mantain my system so that might help as well)
