Jumped on the 512 GB for $200. My 120 GB SSD died so this is going to replace that. Honestly, I don't even need that much room, even right now out of the 1 TB I am using 180 GB :-/ .

EDIT: A bit OT but how long does it take Tigerdirect to do their Address review? I guess since I am a first time buyer they have to do this to make sure there's not some credit card fraud going on.

This is nice to see. In January when I build my birthday rig these will be even cheaper. All I need is 500gb anyways

What do you use to clone a hd? I think I would need a usb transfer encloser but not sure which one.

USB3 dock. I linked one from Amazon above.

Dock is much better than an enclosure for utility use at home - cloning, backing up, etc.

Cool I have some 3.0 usb front ports I can use. I'll look into getting one so I can replace my 256gb with a 512 soon.

Make sure you get a dock that can handle 3.5 and 2.5 drives. The MX100 is 2.5inch sata form factor. That or you can get a usb to sata cable like this http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DQJME7Y/

I found a dock that supports both 2.5 and 3.5 drives. I'll get that dock since its the same price as the cable it seems. Looks like all I do is plug the new 512gb ssd in this dock, then use macrium or another clone utility to select the 256gb drive that's in my desktop right now and clone it.

Going to wait a bit for some time until I choose to upgrade. Maybe a week or two.

For those of you that used this method have you had any issues?

I primarily have the 256 drive with Windows plus a few apps. My 1tb drive just holds my doc and music folders, games and other large data that I don't want to place on the ssd. But with a 512 i think I'll be good.

Looks like my front usb 3.0 ports dont function since the mobo doesn't have a connector for those ports. But I think I have some in the back.

Nice deal, picked one up. Going to get a laptop for Father's day so I will use this to replace the HD that comes with it.

today only (gold box deal) amazon has the san disk extreme 2 drive for about the same price. I might be mistaken but these drives are much better (faster); they compete against the pricey 840 pro. I.e, the 480GB drive is $229.

Yaa... I bought a 120GB M500 a few weeks ago and wish, now, I would have waited for the MX100 256GB. Oh, well.

I am in the same boat but for me it was a 480GB. When Anandtech did the 550 they mentioned the 500 was going to continue to be made as a low end part. I am guessing Crucial said that because they had a lot a 500 stock to move and figured that would get the bargain hunters to buy them up.

New products come out, its a fact of life. However, this feels somehow dirtier on Crucial's part. If they told anandtech that the 500 would continue as a low end part knowing it was about to be discontinued, that seems like active deception.

Oh well, life moves on I guess.

Yeah, very nice price although I suspect most people won't notice the speed difference between that and the "regular" current-gen options.

The really crazy deal of the day is the 480gb Seagate for $190FS no rebate:
http://www.techbargains.com/news_displayItem.cfm/407276

I've linked techbargains because it's TD via eBay. Only downside to the Seagate - high idle power, so it's for desktops and not laptops. I just paid $200 after $20 rebate for it two weeks ago.

why not just plug it in inside your computer with SATA instead of messing around with external solutions?

I have an external solution (just a cable) so I didn't have to waste the time and energy of adding a SATA and power cable into my rig and then pulling them back out again. I added a 2-bay hotswap setup for 2.5"s so no hassles of any kind now.

I have 3 ssd drives in my system now. Only 2 sata 6 ports I believe on this board. I would need to disconnect my Linux drive, plug in the new one, keep it open while I install cloning software, etc. I could do that but I figure the doc would come in handy.

The 512 ssd is a bit pricey right now still but eventually I'll get one.

I never really understood why people like the seagate drive; esp compare to the sandisk extreme ii or 840 pro. Perhaps I missed something in the description of the layout but somehow this drive always seemed less appealing to myself. The drive I like the most (but refuse to spend the $$$ on) is the intel s3700; but the scandisk seems liek a solid drive (though the 840 pro is a bit faster). I'm a bit turned off on samsung right now since 2 of my 3 f3 drives (1tb samsung drives) were silently corrupting data over the years; sure they were faster than wd and seagate but ....

Dang...I've had two 128GB SSDs for quite some time now, one in each PC as the primary OS drive. These prices...!

Sounds like someone missed the PSA a while ago about the Samsung HDD firmware update.

Edit: More on-topic, I would have been all over a pair of 512GB MX100 SSDs, if I wasn't already in semi-significant debt with a friend over all of my previous computer purchases. Gonna have to go light with my purchases for the next few months until I get that paid down.

I picked up a 512 for my work machine, curious to see how it compares to my much-loved Mushkin Enhanced Chronos. My 240-gig is getting a bit small!
