I know a lot of forum readers don't regularly check the AT front page, so I'll link today's launch review:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/8066/crucial-mx100-256gb-512gb-review

TLDR - great performance, no power consumption issues, and with the excellent price even at launch there's no reason not to buy this.

Only issue is that Crucial's attempt at brand differentiation is to reserve the 1tb size for the "higher-end" M550 series, but I really wonder how long that can last.

Get two 512GB SSDs and do a RAID-0 array. The new 9-series intel chipsets offer up to 1.6GB/s throughput on 4x SSD RAID-0 arrays, but my older Z68 gets 1GB/s read/write with a 2x 256GB Samsung 830 array.

It will be interesting to see how low the pricing goes on these drives, though... the MSRP is basically the sale price of the last generation of drives.

I'd wager we'll see them going up a tad. Release at a low price until "MX100" is the new "840 EVO," then add a couple bucks to the price and rake it in.

Agreed. That's pretty much been par for the course for several release cycles now in the SSD world. I have a feeling that these will be seeing a gradual rise in pricing and the 840 EVOs will start inching down in price.

Wow, Tigerdirect has the 256GB for $100 after instant coupon code and the 512GB version for $200 with no rebates to mail in!

That's hot

This SSD I hope will have a very exciting effect on the SSD pricing in general. I never expected them to have the MSRP so low!

Damn 512 is OOS Looks like some pretty decent performance over the 256GB version.

Yea I've been looking for a 512 ssd. I'm a little ssd crazy right now. I have one 256gb for Windows 8, a 128gb, for Linux mint, and another 128gb for a hackintosh install.

Been wanting to upgrade my 256 Windows drive to 512 and use the 256 in case I pick up a MacBook pro or a laptop.

I expect we're going to see the bottom fall out of used SSD prices for smaller, older generation drives. Which is about time, because the prices being asked for Samsung 830s and Crucial M4s is kinda ridiculous.

Newegg just added $10 code to the 256GB and $25 to the 512GB one so you don't have to use up your MASTERPASS10 on these.

This is the first time I've actually seen somebody recommend a RAID-0. Why in the world would you want to make your entire array dependent upon ALL drives functioning??

You do realize that if 1 drive fails for any reason, you lose all of your data, right?

speed > reliability/data integrity?

With generous cloud storage solutions available and multiple drives in a machine, it is not abnormal for users to run a raid-0 array with the OS and applications for which speed is a necessity. Indeed it is one of the very reasons these drives are so successful.

It is true that if a drive fails you have to reinstall. But with SSDs, OS and application installs are not so bad.

Just don't keep data that cannot be lost on the drives or use cloud storage/alternate storage for everything that is a necessity. You could also get a slow multi gb solution and use tools to schedule backups nightly/weekly etc.

There are better solutions than raid1 (leaving out other options with the assumption of two drives) for data security out there and even with raid1 if the controller fails you may lose everything.

A "necessity"?

Running SSDs in a RAID 0 configuration has absolutely nothing to do with the success of SSD. Only an extremely small fraction of the population is doing this.

ordered a 256gb from amazon. prime is most likely going to get it here by the end of the week.

finally have a reason to remove the partitions from my 250gb evo. multiboot is so much easier with separate drives.
