ordered a 256gb from amazon. prime is most likely going to get it here by the end of the week.

finally have a reason to remove the partitions from my 250gb evo. multiboot is so much easier with separate drives.

Yea I agree. I was installing Linux on a regular hd partition that I only used for data and once I moved all my installs to ssd's, especially for Linux and hackingtosh, I'll never go back to using a regular hd.

First time I've ever taken advantage of one of these deals, but I got a 256GB unit from Newegg with a 10% off promo code that made it an even $99.

yeh less worry when installing new linux distros. might actually try a full hackintosh install.

I can't see your Sig since I'm on tapa but for hackingtosh just make sure you use a decent Intel core I5 or I7 processor and a modern mobo like a gigabyte and you should not have issues. Kexts and drivers as long as your mobo uses realtek audio and or Ethernet, you should be fine.

Heard that a lot around the site. I buy so much from them I went ahead and signed up for Premier. It's made a big difference. I suppose some would say that you shouldn't have to pay extra for good service, but with free expedited handling and lots of shipping discounts, the yearly membership has already paid for itself. I probably shouldn't be plugging Newegg like this because I might get flamed, but they've never been bad for me in the eleven years I've bought stuff from them. Not always the cheapest to be sure, but for me, pretty fast and reliable, and they've never hassled me on RMAs, probably because I don't have many as a percentage.

If you have a desktop you could use the free version of Macrium Reflect. Works great for me, I have recently changed out a couple of 500 gb hdd's to 256 gb SSD's in some new laptops.

I just hooked up both the HDD and the SSD to regular Sata ports in the desktop and did the clone from there. I had to force my bios to boot the regular SSD in the desktop, it seemed to prefer to try to boot the operating system from the laptop HDD's.

Edit; Would probably be simpler for you using the dock that S44 linked, my desktop has a couple of docks that accept 2.5" drives so I'm pretty much set up for the process.

I went RAID 0 with a pair of Sammy SSDs a while back for my Steam drive. It didn't feel any faster than a single Sammy 830 at all.

Get two 512GB SSDs and do a RAID-0 array. The new 9-series intel chipsets offer up to 1.6GB/s throughput on 4x SSD RAID-0 arrays, but my older Z68 gets 1GB/s read/write with a 2x 256GB Samsung 830 array.

Wow, nice!

TigerDirect now lets you order the 512gb one again, though the ship time is 7-21 business days.

If you want it sooner, pay $3 more for shipping and get it at the Egg...

Thanks all, managed to get the 512GB version at TD for $180 via ShopRunner. Nothing in my Amex account offers so I didn't max out the savings, but oh well.

First SSD

Waiting on the 256GB to arrived, shipped yesterday. This will be my largest SSD. Next largest is 180GB.

I would suspect it has something to do with the 'new member offer' from Tigerdirect Canada.

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/

Sign up, then follow the link... in the .ca domain, change to .com and shop. This, coupled with the Amex and whatever other 2%-5% off the price could have the $199 dropped to $180. Don't forget the Tigerdirect Coupon for the drive either.

To note: I couldn't get the Tigerdirect .ca to .com trick to work fully. Only got $5 additional dollars off. Others may have a better outcome.

Good luck!

Wait...how did you get $180?

This.

Come baaaaaaaaaack! :'(

Actually, it was from the above mentioned thread at SD. I didn't get the $15 offer in my AMEX account, but ShopRunner has been dropping an email with $20 off $100 or more apparently. If you didn't get it, you can email and ask for it (assuming you are a member of course). I'm already signed up via my Costco AMEX, so I emailed and within 20-30 minutes they sent me a link.

Edit: Some folks were apparently able to get it for $165 I saw. But I figured $180 was good enough for me

Not a member of AMEX or ShopRunner. Can't get that $15 customer appreciation code from TigerDirect.ca to work either. It's for the best. This would have been an impulse buy otherwise.

I'm going to wait until I have a MacBook or something else to put my 256gb Samsung in so I can replace it with a 512 model.
