I picked up a 256 GB for $100 one of these for my dad for his birthday. He's been playing with and building his own computers for a long time, and he's the grumpy sort who doesn't like to spend money on things he "doesn't need". So I have to spend money for him and then he reluctantly acknowledges how great they are later

I strongly suggested a clean install, but he insisted on using his favorite image-restore programs, and after dueling windows to the death (and removing all other internal drives) he finally managed to get the SSD recognized as C:

Anyway, after we got everything squared away, he was SHOCKED by how fast it booted and how fast his programs launched. Like, literal mouth open "double-you-tee-eff" shocked. He's a very happy camper.

Would highly recommend this one if you or someone you like hasn't made the SSD jump yet. Excellent price, excellent drive.

I'm astounded at the price point they rolled these out at, they must be serious about wrestling the market from Samsung.

I bought a M500 128GB last month... I wish I would have waited for the 256GB MX100 for almost the same price.

I too was quite surprised. I almost pulled the trigger on the similar capacity m500 last week (for a nearly identical price), but then this one came along...

Price competitive, plus I've heard good things about Crucial's support/RMA process, and virtually nothing but horror stories about Samsung's. I would agree that this makes them a VERY serious competitor for getting the market back.

The horror stories from Samsung are they mainly for TLC drives? Is there any real data on how reliable these new TLC drives actually are? They've been out a while now, would be interesting to see how people are finding them.

I was concerned about that too. He's using Terabyte's Image for Linux, which claims that it aligns partitions correctly for going from HDD->SSD. I asked him to check that the offsets are divisible by 4096, but he hasn't gotten back to me on that yet.

No, the Samsung horror stories are about trying to initiate an RMA. The website submission for doesn't work, you have to call. After that, it's easy... if you don't mind, in my case, getting a refurb unit for a premium SSD (840Pro) that died in less than 1 year of service.

As far as the actual SSD failure rate, I suspect they are about as average as everyone else's.

Even if Samsung should have that mentioned bad customer service, at least one should need it seldom.

Just picked up the 512Gb variant of the MX100 from Newegg (think it was limited to one per customer). I trust Crucial and like their drives. Psyched to plunk this new one in my notebook and see how it performs. The pricing on these is a steal, extremely awesome.

Can't wait!

My M4 is horribly inconsistent in performance once it gets up to about 60% full. Its a real bummer to have a drive that is otherwise reasonably fast and have it misbehave badly at only half its capacity. Any clues as to how the MX100 copes with being nearly full?

You can compare the IO consistency here:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6884/crucial-micron-m500-review-960gb-480gb-240gb-120gb/3
http://www.anandtech.com/show/8066/crucial-mx100-256gb-512gb-review/3

Massive increase as the MX100 manages around 5K IOPS at steady-state while the performance of the m4 was mostly zero IOPS.

Where does the M500 fit in here? I'm trying now to remember where I have the M4's, and M500's. So far I only have one MX100 - looking to put it in the wife's laptop this weekend.

The data for the M500 (1TB) is in the same chart as the MX100
