One cavet: it's CL 3!!!!!!
Maximum PC had a good article on CAS rating and performance. Their conclusion was that the performance difference was pretty darn small, I think CAS 2 was only 2% faster than CAS 3 in the diagnostic that showed the biggest performance gain.

I sent them an email asking what kind of chips they used and if it was 5ns. If so, I'm on it! I don't like all these sticks out there with these heat spreaders on them, hiding the info. Atleast with Crucial, you know what you're getting. Plus they have perhaps the best warranty/RMA process, right up there with Corsair.

Generally speaking, Crucial Memory overclocks very well. Their PC3200 may very well often go to much higher speeds (PC2100 generally hits 2700, 2700 generally hits 3200).

on top of that, I'd pay extra for the crucial name rather than OCZ, Geil, or XtremeDDR... I'd pass on all three of those, regardless of price.

Um, most of the articles I've seen show that upping the CL of your memory is the best performance boost there is. But then again, they were all talking about CL 2 over CL 2.5, not a single one of them even mentioned CL 3. I suspect they never even considered it, from a performance perspective.

The difference between running at 2.5-3-3-6-2T on my Abit KR7A and running at 2-2-2-5-1T was about 700 3DMarks in 3DMark 2001...that's quite a difference IMHO, especially considering the fact that I was scoring about 9,000-10,000 at the time. That was about a 7-10% difference! I actually SAW the improvement in games, too. Running with my cheap, Samsung PC2100 CL2.5 RAM, I was dipping down to about 25fps in T2, but after upgrading to a nice stick of Corsair XMS2700C2, I was only going down 30-34fps.

The difference between 2-3-3-6-2T and 3-3-3-6-2T may not be much, but there is a huge difference between 3-3-3-6-2T and 2-2-2-5-1T!

You compared a PC2100 and PC2700 stick?

Yes, but both were run at PC2100 speed (266mhz), so it was as if I had a stick of PC2100 2.5-3-3-6-2T and a stick of PC2100 2-2-2-5-1T.

As I already said, it was on an Abit KR7A-RAID, which is a KT266A based motherboard. PC2100 is the fastest the KT266A chipset supports without OC'ing, and I didn't OC it.

i don't think this really matters much until you know what type of chips are on the pcb. even at higher cas ratings some memory will have better throughput. once we know what chips are on their pc3200 you'd be better able to make an argument but not until then imo.

you ahve to remember that cas latency is not the only thing that affects mem performance. Running at 2-3-3 isn't a big improvement over 3-3-3. What you should really look for is 2-2-2 memory. Either way Crucial tends to be pretty conservative with their memory ratings so I'm sure these will OC nicely.

crucial used to be a good product now they are late to the game on everything and they are offering poor quality. i think CL3 is terrible even some of the generic companies offer better than this now!

Check out these 2 guides 1 and 2. The first one does a lot of benchmarking of 2100-3200 and the 2nd one goes upto 3700 (didnt know that existed
). I found them to be quite informative.
