<< I expect prices to fall somewhat in the coming year, but I highly doubt it will get to as low as it was for quite a while. >>

Darn. Now if I could only underclock to the point of negative clock cycles, go back in time (one year), and buy 500 gigs of the good stuff. Oh well. Thanks for the answers.

I'm not buying any more RAM until the PC2100 256MB comes down to $35 like it was several months ago. You are getting ripped off if you buy ram now. They are price gouging just like the oil companies with gasoline. Maybe it's time the government steps in, like they did with the oil companies.

I know my reply should be in Brag & Moan but....

I got a reply from crucial regarding my 2 purchases, one for the more expensive ram, and one for the cheaper ram.

How coincidental that they had already shipped the more expensive one, and left the cheaper one "in progress."

Grrrrr...I guess I should be happy that they didn't ship both, now I don't have to put anything on Ebaaaaay.

It won't come down to that price for a while (at least the crucial or similar stuff). Its natural market forces, not price gouging. Nothing is preventing those companies from lowering the price, except market forces. Feel free to go to pricewatch and get some generic ram if you want to get the lowest prices and that's all you care about. This is not the same as the oil market, in the oil market OPEC sets the prices and the production goals in millions of barrels of the Middle Eastern countries that drill for oil. BTW, the government didn't really step in and do anything. All Clinton did when the prices were at the worst was release a paltry like 1% of a weeks output worth of oil from the strategic reserves. That wasn't enough to lower the price more than maybe 1 cent per gallon. He only did it to gain publicity. Sure the gov talked with OPEC, but OPEC usually does whatever it wants to.

Damn PC133 ram is still $95 or so after the discount for 256 MB. Maybe I should just look into a new MB and processor.

BTW, pricewatch check shows that the lowest price for 256 2100 ddr is back up to $49 generic. Dunno why they had a temporary drop, maybe reaction to crucial then they figured out crucial was an exception or somthing. I still think crucial is going to pop the price back up soon.

at $35 per stick of 256MB DDR, we were gouging them. they were losing tons of money, so much that #3 ram maker (hynix of korea) filed bankruptcy and that was the moment DDR prices soared. simple market forces, its cyclical get used to it.

Actually, most overclockers use DDR if they use AMD chips. Only the ones who overclock Intel use rdram, and even then, you can get intel platforms with DDR support. Personally I think RDram is going to slowly fade away over time as better and better DDR specs come out. I mean nothing much has happened with RDram, and intel has pretty much withdrawn their RDram support, and Rambus is involved in all sorts of lawsuits over some of the stuff. Heck, they tried to get all manufactures of DDR ram to pay royalties to them on every chip sold.

Hey Devistater I remember the earthquake theory a few years ago. That was so amazing. The quake woke up farm animals, damaged cardboard huts in villages w/o electricity or sewers, and oh yea, destroyed the only factory in the world that made the most advanced memory in the world. People believed this but have trouble with arabs cutting oil production and gas prices going up!

I'm amazed at the narrow mindedness of some people...

On topic, though, I am glad to see memory prices starting to become reasonable again. Of course, by reasonable I mean by today's standards, not standards from 10 years ago when it was $75/meg.

Good post!

dude, grow up. ram is still cheaper than it was 2 years ago when 128 cost $100. now you get 256 for $65. and the oil companies make a certain percentage of the price, mostly its opec getting money. not that the oil companies don't have the right to set the price at their profit maximizing point. so long as they're not colluding i have not moral beef with them.

Ouch, the price went back up to 80.74. Guess the sale/price error was for a couple of days only.

Bah, I swear Crucial is psychic. I plan on ordering the parts for a new Athlon XP system tomorrow, and what do they do? Raise the prices $15 the day before I intend to place an order. I'm not too mad though, but I would love to know how the figured out to raise prices just now.

Price updates as of 2:15 am April 10.

Crucial Shows 256 MB PC2100 web price as $85.74. OUCH
Newegg Shows the same stick for $76 (+$6 shipping). STILL BAD!

Man, I bought that stick for $30 back in November. Sigh, oh well. Must patiently wait some more time.
