Crucial was correct .. I can use 1 GB stick.

Now that I verified Crucial was correct ... I can use a pair of 1 gig sticks in my MB. I am wondering if I should put a memory heatsink on these 1 gig double-sided DDR1 333 memory. I've never used memory heatsinks before. I'm concerned about spacing also.

MB=Gigabyte GA8-PE800 Ultra and also Gigabyte GA8-PE667 Ultra.

I'm debating puting both sticks on one MB or making 2 MBs 1.5 Gig.
Effective next week both boards will have a P4 3.06 533 512 HT CPU.

Heatsinks are really not necessary for RAM.

They can be slightly beneficial for extremely high end OCing where a lot of vDIMM is used with active/extreme cooling, but other than that, they are generally unneeded.

Remember we covered this ground before...

Even though the Gigabyte general spec says this MB supports up to 2GB's, the more important information is that each slot only accepts up to 512MB DIMMs.

usually such limitations mean you can still use bigger sticks, just not in all 4 slots...
Aka... 2x1GB sticks or 4x512GB sticks, not 4x1GB.

Ya ... we did Blain. I agree the manual says up to 2 gig, but the chart quits at 2 sticks of 512.

Crucial's rep guaranteed me 1 meg sticks would work or RMA for full refund. I got hungry and bought under that guarantee. I now have both 1 Gig sticks in my MB running just fine.
My next challenge is to justify that much memory in one PC. :gift:
My other choice would be 1 Gig stick + 512 stick (or 2 256s) netting me 1.5 gig which is plenty for now. Vista should be happy even with that memory allocation and a 3.06 HT CPU.

When I get theP4 3.06 HTs running I may experiment with Vista or see if I can play with some other OS for grins and giggles. I will have 2 such builds on my outdated MBs. The questions that I will have then are for other sections of the forum.

These are 3 slot MBs. Slot 1 takes up Banks 1 & 2. The other two slots are for banks 3 & 4, but the other two slots are also wired to handle 1 stick for both other banks and keep a bank unused. That is the case here.

That's the way I plan to play it. I beleive I have good airflow there.

I just wish I had a reliable way to measure the memory temps without risk of a short. I have a spare temp sensor that I could place there but I worry about static electricity if I decide to remove the tape used to hold the sensor there.
