Yep, most of the folks driving the big SUVs don't even keep an eye out for cars, let alone motorcycles.

I regularly see idiots tailgating motorcycles as well. I always give them plenty of space. A bike can stop on a dime, cars and SUVs can't. Really puts riders in a sticky situation, especially in traffic when they can't exactly speed up to get the jerk off their arse. I have friends who ride but I never would myself, for that reason. Too dangerous. As a result, insurance is through the roof too.

Of course the SQUIDs on the pocket rockets aren't exactly helping keep the accident rate down. Tearing up the highway at 200km/h wearing only a helmet and a lotta luck. Even the Angels wear full leathers.

Actually, you would be hard pressed to get any bike to stop quicker or in less distance than a modern sports car.

Splitting hairs though, as most people do not drive modern sports cars. SUVs are the most popular type of vehicle around these parts. If one's tailgating a bike and the bike has to crash stop, the SUV is going into the back of him.

Four contacts patches vs two. Much bigger contact patches. Less weight transfer (I believe). But a lot more weight to stop. Cars and bikes have pretty similar stopping distances. I'd guess reaction time is an issue. The bike is reacting to something. Then the SUV reacts to the bike. One second at 45mph is 66'.

60-0
F-150 132'
Honda Civic 131'
Honda CRV 120'

ElectraGlide 144'
GSXR1000 132'
GoldWing 121'

And the car contact patches are better/wider. Plus almost all cars have abs, most bikes on the road do not. It takes an exceptional bike and rider to out brake a car significantly. Some riders have the exceptional bike, almost none have both.

Depends entirely on the rider.

This is a few years old now but:

2009 Best motorcycle 60mph-0 stopping distance (ft)
Harley-Davidson XR1200 109.5
Ducati Monster 1100S 112.4
BMW K1300S (ABS) 113.0
Yamaha FZ6R 113.1
Triumph Street Triple R 114.6
Suzuki SFV650 Gladius 115.7
Moto Guzzi Griso 1200 8V 116.3
Triumph Bonneville 117.2
Aprilia Mana 850 117.4
Triumph 1050 Speed Triple 120.0

There are a whole bunch of cars that will stop shorter than 120 ft from 60mph. Plus, the big difference with stopping a car from 60mph is that any bonehead can equal the test performance by just stomping on the pedal and letting the ABS modulate at impending lockup. With a motorcycle, it is much harder to do this unless your bike has ABS. I would guess that very few street riders can achieve the braking performance reported by MCN, which are done at a test track by a professional rider who tests dozens of different bikes a year.

Bikes are limited in ways that cars are not. Lifting the rear wheel and kinking the front end under hard braking are things a rider has to worry about. Also, a rider cannot brake effectively in a turn.

These are all non-issues, really. In front of you, behind you, to the side of you... as a rider, you have to scan all directions at all times. Make decisions based on what your skills can handle, not what vehicles around you might or might not do or be able to do. A corvette can stop on a dime but only if the driver sees you! Situational awareness is your best friend while on a bike.

Just yesterday I was nearly run over by a guy in an F-250 that merged into my lane in order to turn left on a city street. I was in the process of passing him by about 5mph and he decided to move over right when I was at his rear driver side door. Because I didn't have time to scan behind me to brake, I sharply accelerated and veered around his front end, straddling the dividing line between us and oncoming traffic. Had I braked, I might've surprised the car behind me and been pinched between the 2 vehicles. These are the split second reactions a rider must make... life or death decisions, unlike similar situations in a car.

And you just know that the guy in the pickup went home and bitched about the "crazy guy on a motorcycle" who went flying by even though his truck was already in the lane.

Ha, you've pretty much nailed it. When I was past him, I turned to look at him and shook my head. He gave me a look like I was the A-hole and held up a rage-fueled 1-finger salute to top it off.

People are crazy :-\
