Thanks Bro! I am building a SFF unit and those numbers helped...
I read some of it on the g|g spot.

good stuff, thanks BT. i wish they'd make their site more readable though. whats with squishing all the articles into 10% of the page

this is a little dated but is a good companion to the ET article.

I'd love to see a push for more efficient power supplies. I like my Seasonic. Data from an old thread:

Antec:
"Soft-off state" = 0.12A
Idle at desktop = 2.10A
Power factor while idle = 0.69
Prime 95 torture test = 2.54A - 208.20888 Watts
Power factor during test = 0.70

Seasonic:
"Soft-off state" = 0.07A
Idle at desktop = 1.33A
Power factor while idle = 0.96
Prime 95 torture test = 1.67A - 190.46016 Watts
Power factor during test = 0.96

That was when I went from an Antec Truepower 430W to a Seasonic 460W (it was on sale, that's the reason I got the higher power rating PSU). That's the power consumption for a system I had at the time of the post (about a year ago). Switching to the Seasonic gave a reduction of nearly 20 watts. No other hardware was changed. Pretty nifty.

And there's a new marketing thing for the computer industry, just like the MPG craze with the auto industry: FLOPS/Watt. Or something like that. And like MPG, Watts-idle and watts-full-usage could be given. At least until we all have Mr. Fusion's running in our basements.

You know, it drives me nuts when I hear people that plan on powering $1500 worth of hardware on a $50 PSU. After having power issues and problems for so long, and losing data on RAID 5 arrays because the PSU hiccups, I'll always be safe in that respect. Nothing is worth more than security in the realm of PSUs. So although my machine might only use 445 watts as measured with a Seasonic Angel, I'm glad to know that I've got 655 extra watts to play with if necessary.

Slightly OT, but I had to give my $.02.

Agreed - you don't benefit from eating cheap junkfood. Likewise, your computer won't benefit from being fed poorly filtered power.
