Just wondering because i've heard conflicting reports on this. Some say that is really bad for the car to use cruise control a lot, setting, disabling, then resetting, they also say its bad to decelerate and accelerate using cruise control. Others say it doesn't really matter. I tend to side with the latter because if cruise control is so limited and sensitive to use, whats the point of installing it?? Anybody know for a fact one way or the other?

I think I heard it on Top Gear that cruise gives you worse mileage on the highway.

The only time I use it is if I need to tie my shoelaces while I'm driving,

I trust an electronic circuit more than my right foot to keep my speed and engine revolutions exactly steady. As for it being bad for the car, the only thing you MIGHT wear out by setting/resetting/etc. is the cruise control electronics, but it's very unlikely that'd happen.

I personally love cruise control. It nets me over 32 m.p.g. on the highway with my 2004 Accord 4-cyl.

I forgot to mention that the reason i'm asking is that i used to use it a lot during my commute but last night, as i was coming home, the cruise control won't set anymore.

I use it. THe only condition that would cause CC to use more gas is that you can predict a hill coming up and can speed up to get some momentum for going over it. Cruise control will just apply more gas to maintain that perfectly constant speed to get up the hill. I like cruise and I use it some what, but when I'm driving in the mountains I usually don't use it.

I use my cruise control on the highway to keep an even 65 on the trip between school and home, and I get 35+ mpg (car is rated at 32)... so that's a load of sh!t.

The only way I imagine it affects mileage is if you're using cruise control exclusively to manage speed, b/c you're not changing gears appropriately.

I use it in the car I'm currently driving until my new one's delivered. It's a 2004 Mondeo 1.8, and the cruise control makes long journeys soooo much more bearable. I have a tendancy to drop speed slowly and then have to gain it back again (no idea why), and I just find cruise control results in a smoother ride.

Naa cruise control is fine EXCEPT in the rain or worse sleet/snow. If the tires lose contact the controller will add power to keep the speed constant.Result is loss of control/spin out.

Ya know, my father was the same way growing up. Don't use that because it'll wear out and the car won't be worth as much when you trade it in. Example: The radio antenna that used to go up and down with a motor. He put it up and uplugged the damn motor so it wouldn't wear out.

What's the minimum speed generally that you can set cruise control at? I suppose if you just coast that can be considered cruise control, but how fast before the cruise control will let you set it?

my dad uses it ALL the freakin time! pisses me off sometimes to :| HE uses it in the rain also which further annoys me. and then he drives by holding on to the bottom left peg of the steering wheel. rather annoying

I only use cruise when theres not a lot of traffic or if my legs getting tired

the minimum totally depends on the car - my first car, an old volvo, for the short time i had the cruise working (solenoid died - had to get a whole new motor, screw that), it would hold cruise down to 20.
on the other hand, many cars have cruise controls now that won't work above a certain speed. i know a toyota or 2 won't hold over 85
