I dunno, I think maybe it is best to deal with it early on. Sure it may go away but the problem is probably still there and will only get worse. But this has just been my experience .. what do I know ?

Closest post to my opinion. Drugs are too often given to treat the symptoms, while the main problem goes unaddressed. It's time to do some deep self-reflection about how your life is and how you would like it to be.

Exactly. When the drugs are removed, the problem will remain, creating a dependency.

What he said. One bad day does not make you clinically depressed. But if symptoms persist, seek professional help.

Oh yeah, get some decent food, exercise, and buy yourself something nice. Then remember that the Iraqi Minister of (dis)Information is having a much worse day than you (if he's still alive). That always helps me smile.

Okay. First off, in order to treat depression. Theres to steps.

Step One: Medication. If you feel like crap and a depressed you are very unlikely to change things in your life.

Step Two: Counseling. Talking about and making changes in your life.

Medication isnt supposed to be the fix. Its supposed to help you fix the problem. Any Dr. that allows a patient to stay on meds forever should have his license revoked.

Medication is just the first step as I said. You arent meant to stay on it forever, unless you truely do have severe mental problems(more than just depression).

But like I said, if you feel like sh!t you are not likely to change anything. You have to be in a good mood, a positive mood to make life changes. Drs arent over prescribing medications, people just think meds will solve the problem and typically dont do what the Dr says, see a counselor.

So to sum it up. If you are depressed for more than two weeks. You should see a Dr. Get medication. See a Counselor. Make changes in life. Go off medication. See Dr and Counselor periodically(say every 3 months), to make sure things are still okay.

That's BS. I was depressed for years for absolutely no reason. I had no problems to be worrying about. All I knew was that I was very depressed and I had no idea why since I had no reason to be. I took Prozac to help, and it did. When the prescription ran out, the depression would return. About 4 years later I grew out of it, and no longer needed Prozac.

Clinical depression runs in my family, btw.

It's not quite that simple.

If you'd ever been there, you would know.

i haven't and i'm glad i haven't. more people should think about the world like me and there'd be a lot less crying.

I see, so you are walking breathing proof of the old cliche that "ignorance is bliss"?

Depression caused by losing gf/friend/job/family/whatever is usually temporary, although it can and often will hit you hard. The other kind of depression can kick in at any time, even when you have a 'perfect life'. It's a physical/psychological disorder which can be kept invisible to the outside world, until a breaking point has been reached. Councelling may help, but that depends on the person. If it does not you will be stuck with medication most of your life, unless you don't mind the risk of suddenly breaking and committing suicide.

As he explained that he has not had a recent loss or anything, but always is a bit down, it may very well be the second, in which case it is advisable to at least let a doctor look at it to see if help is needed.

You may simply pull out of the depression again on your own, but there is also the risk that you wont, and unless you have someone who understands the feeling and can support you it may break you up.

Yeah, I have had both kinds of depression....ones with obvious reasons such as what I mentioned and one where I just didn't know what the hell was the problem!...I actually preferred the latter though...was easier to forget!

You didn't grow out of it, depression is unpredicable illness and can disappear for awhile but down the road it may return. Major depression tends to come in bouts and then subsides.

I got on Columbia house's depression of the month club, and sometimes I forget to send back the card in time. I've been trying out the post winter poverty depression, it's ok but nothing like the previous depressions I received from them.

happened to me once. everything just sorta builds up in a stressful time, then it all comes out.
