So whats a safe VRM and GPU temp or the limits?
My 7870 is doing around 477Mhash/s with the GPU at a steady 93 and the VRM at 111. That's at 1200Mhz

92 and 106 at 1150 with 455Mhash/s

Yikes that is pretty hot... but it's still below TJMax so I guess it's safe, but at that temp it is definitely shortening the lifespan of the chip by a good amount. I would not want to run 24/7 at those temps.

my 7950s in CFX stay around 75C, haven't checked VRM.

What is is the Tjmax value for a 7970?

Yea I dropped down to 1150 to reduce the power and heat a little.
That and only run at night so it should be cooler tonight. Just got the card and wanted to see what it will do.

I want to try mining with my 6870 ( I know, I know. Just testing for now ).
For some reasons all the mining programs I've tried (cgminer, guiminer, poclbm and others) crash on start up. I suspect some kind of driver problem.
Which driver should I use to mine ? Currently I'm on Catalyst 13.1

That is too high. Try to keep the temps 80C and below ideally. VRMs are usually rated to 120C IIRC, so you are very close to max. Running those temps 24/7 is not a good idea.

Try using the AMD driver removal utility, then install 12.6-12.8. I had good luck with those drivers, and terrible luck with 13.1.

Decided to dip my toes in the LTC pool... Using notroll.in and a stock 5870 with Guiminer Scrypt (latest version + Cat 13.1) I can get 400kh at Intensity 18, TC 6144.

However, the computer is basically unusable with this running, and since this is the wife's machine (hehe) it has to be up to her modest usability standards. At I-15 the computer is fairly usable and gets 350kh, so I think I'll leave it there for a bit and see if she complains.

I simply installed 13.3 beta on top of the 13.1 and the miners are now working !

I decided to give it a whirl also....Using the 13.3 beta drivers also.

My 7870 is running at 1150/1200 GPU at 63c vrm's at 23c which seems ok to me....Pumping out a little over 400Mhash/s

I will post it in a minute or two.

I actually ran 4 for a while!

the temps are pretty good with that 10 inch fan.

haha that is good stuff! What temps are you getting?

I have a few stand fans blasting air on them, totally open like yours. My middle one gets the hottest at about 82c, top one gets 72c, bottom 68c.

I was going to start mining but I just confirmed my 7950 has issues.

Of course, I was an early adopter of the 7950. Bought it when the first cards came out(ie: I was gouged). Worse the only one in stock was the XFX DD(not Black). I've already had to warranty the card before to fix the fans(they went out). Well my damn card at stock runs at 96C at 100% load and with the fans at 100%. Bumping the card up to 1000mhz didn't increase temps. All this leads me to believe the card is defective or there isn't any thermal compound between the cooler and the chip.

Also I was only getting 431mhash/s which seems to be low for a 7950?

So no mining for me(atleast not yet).

THE QUOTE FROM ABOVE is about 1 in the morning. my earnings from april 2 to the end of april 8 were 460 usd 15 hours later my earnings are at 562.24. 1 /20 of that is 28,11 minus 2.10 in power the hd 7790 has now earned 26 bucks in 7 days! coins are now above 225! I feel they are closer to 100 in value based on hash and price. will post back on this

Philip I have 2 x 7990's on the way and was considering an i7 3440 to run them. Do you think this would be suitable? Also, what's your thoughts on water cooling them?

$231 is insane!! Amazing!!! My 5870 made something over 20x what I paid for it after about 5 months of mining!

I've been observing the hash rate on my 7970 and it fluctuates from 400 ~ 650 Mhash/sec...my temperature seems to be okay at 78 so does anybody know what is the cause for this?

Mining does not use squat for cpu power. If buying a cpu just for mining, people buy the cheapest one they can. Last one I bought was a $40 AMD Sempron.

Other notes:

- If you want to run your mining rigs without cases get some pci-e 1x to 16x extender cables and run the cards off those. Cards will run way cooler not crammed together and not having one card on top of another inside a case.

- Fluctuations with mining hash usually are the result of the pool you are connected to not handling the load, being ddos'ed or simply broken. Try a different pull if it keeps happening.

My hottest running cards are around 72C. I don't mess with clocks anymore, just don't have the patience anymore to spend hours tweaking for a 5-10% gain on mhash, if that.

Right now I am mining less than usual at home, it's too damn hot here and I need to get the A/C condensate line cleaned out before turning it on for the season. I mine while I'm home with the windows and back door open, but since I need to keep things locked while I am at work I shut everything down. This is costing me about $15/day by my calculations.

you know the 7990 are the huge double gpu cards..

the one I have is hard to cool. so two of them you may need water cooling.

you purchased two of these cards?

no such thing as an i7 3440 cpu . you must have done a typo..

Where did you get the extenders from?

Ebay. Payed about $6 each shipped from a US seller. If ordering make sure you get the 1x to 16x extenders as opposed to the 1x to 1x extenders. The 1x to 1x extenders have a "closed" socket on one end which means you would have to do some dremeling to it to make it work on a 16x video card.

I'm pretty much the same here on clocks and messing with the settings. I will mess with it for a while until it is in the average ball part of what the card should be getting. No tweaking to get the last little hash for me.

I'm curious, what's wrong with mining while the house is locked up and hot. Since you are not doing any extreme overclocking, these cards really don't mind a hot room. I mine 4 gpu's in my garage. If I had more than one plug and breaker out there I would be mining all gpu's in my garage.
