I don't think thats the only issue though. When I had it unlocked, I had +50% powertune, and a custom fan profile, and yet there were stability issues and what not at stock settings while mining. I also heard that some people with real 290x's were having issues as not getting very good hash rate compared to 290 cards, so I wonder if it is partly poor miner optimization for the X version.

Have you looked at the core clock during mining? Maybe theres a lot of throttling going on. These miners aren't optimized for R290s at all, we're all using 7950/7970 profiles.

Ya I know lol. Also, what is the best way to mine LTC on a 3770k?

All the cryptocoins are taking a beating. Probably a lot of profit taking, since it seems the rally has finished. I still have confidence in the long term.

minerd And I would highly recommend it on i7s because it treats virtual cores as physical cores. In other words, you get the same hashrate across all cores.

remember to download stratum proxy for it, run stratum proxy first, then run minerd via command prompt.

This is what I have for mine:
G:\LTCminer\minerd.exe -o http://127.0.0.1:8332 -u nwo75200.3 -p 1010

Basically, your ip address should be the same, the only thing you need to change is your file location, usename and password, stratum proxy takes care of the rest.

Mining on GPU is still better though, I guess?
Btw, any point in trying this on mobile GPUs? They are pretty crippled versions, but better than nothing.

Yes, mining even on a crap GPU would still likely yield better hashrate than mining on a CPU. For instance, I get around 130 hashes with my 4870 while I get only 100 with my i7 4770k @ 4GHz.

Here is a hardware comparison list, so you can decide for yourself.

I hope that you took some profit at the top.

Well, there are ways to limit the temperature or load or something. I believe I saw something in the documentation for cgminer.

Yes, you can always set a temperature threshold, but what good is that since most mobile GPUs run extremely hot while gaming. If you were to mine with them, they would be running even hotter which would lead to reduced life and if they get damaged, odds are you're pretty much screwed and have to buy a new laptop.

Well, I've been testing it for a few hours out of curiosity and temperature seems to be stable around 70-75°C. The CPU is also barely doing anything at all, so overheating doesn't seem to be a problem at all (I tried to play games at some point, and with CPU and GPU both doing stuff I almost burned myself putting my hand in front of the fan hole).

So - fellow litecoin miners - where are the best/legit places to spend litecoins or cash out in USD?

If you really want to use your laptop, limit the temp to 65C and use 14 intensity. You may be ok like that, and it will perform better than the CPU.

Why specifically 14? I set it to 15 or 16, which is roughly the maximum value where I can still switch to different window without waiting 10 seconds. The laptop is not being used at all five days a week, so I can afford having it in semi-useless state. I am still monitoring the temperatures, but so far it seems good.

I just jumped the shark on a 1200$ setup for scrypt mining. If it doesn't work out, I got a HTPC and good video cards to resell.

GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD3H LGA 1155 Intel Z77
Team Vulcan 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
Intel Celeron G1620 Ivy Bridge 2.7GHz
(2) GIGABYTE GV-R929D5-4GD-B Radeon R9 290 4GB
XFX P1-850B-BEFX 850W ATX12V 2.2 & ESP12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD
open air bench case: DIYPC Alpha-DB6 Black Acrylic ATX Bench Case Bench

Gonna run it in my basement where it's 50F in winter, and stay at 73F in summer.

I should be looking at 1700 KH/s at ~750Watts with a <2 Month break even on litecoin.

Any advice?

Just realized that the 2x 290's would game better than my gaming rig!

The two-year chart on bitcoinity:
change: +33056.29% high: 1242.00 low: 2.61

Just amazing to me.

I hope that you took some profit at the top.

I didn't. Just don't have a real need for USD cash money right now, though I might buy $1000 or $500 in amazon credit for Christmas gifts, soon.

I bought a 290x and am planning to mine with it. Is voltage control possible with these? I feel like stock voltage will probably be a disaster when mining with these cards.

Asus tweak utility can change voltage if you have asus (or flashed with asus bios) card.
Or afterburner beta

I downvolted my card and now its almost silent and is running at 70'C. 7770 @950/5000MHz @1.0 V is using about 40 Watts at the wall

Nice, what hashrate are you getting at those settings? I just ordered two asus 7790s today

So I have downloaded GUIMiner and pointed into to a pool BTC Guild. I've also downloaded MultiBit and have the GUIMiner tool pointed to it. It's running at 60ish Mhash/s.

Now I know the number is low but I just bought a 7970 with hopes to improve the rate. When or how exactly do you get revenue for this? I know the Mh/s is low but when could someone expect to receive some $$ from it? Or should I be focused on litecoins instead?

With a video card, remove Bitcoin mining from your mind. It's scrypt based coins like Litecoin from now on, into the foreseeable future anyway.

That being said, you were doing something wrong, because 600Mh/s is easy with a 7970.

Basically what chimaxi83 said...

You should be getting 600-700mH/s on a single 7970 if you are mining Litecoins with cgminer. If you are using GUI miner to mine Litecoins, you can expect about 5-10% lower hashrates.

Not really sure what you are trying to do because there was insufficient data in your post. But, do not use a BTC mining pool for mining Litecoins, that might be causing your issue.

14 is best for desktop use. 17 is best when I'm gonna be away from the PC for a while. I would still be cautious with the laptop.
