Kind of a noob question here, but I have a 8800 GTX laying around. Could I put it in the same win7 comp with a 290 or would that cause too many driver conflicts?

I don't think it would be worth the hassle. Not sure if it would even be possible at all. Also a 8800GTX would probably not even be able to break even in electricity costs. So unless you have free power, you would actually lose money mining on a 8800GTX.

If you want a few extra hashes, because that's all the 8800GTX is going to give you, I would recommend mining on your CPU instead. Odds are you are going to get more hashes out of the CPU than your 8800GTX since an 8800GT gets less than 15kH/s :\

Using Intel GPU along with AMD card (I assume any discrete card) is major pain in the ass.
What works for me right now (still watching it) is using dummy plug on the AMD card, leave Windows rendering desktop on both of them (I just couldn't get having only the Intel one active to work no matter what), and don't set intensity over 17. That way I don't see much lag at all (I can still watch a movie without problems).

However, if you're talking about some kind of workaround for not using a dummy plug, I can't help you there.
So with the dummy plug, you're not encountering any problems then right? Share acceptance is good and everything? Right now I have my 2nd monitor connected to the Intel GPU so when I dual screen, my BenQ is powered by the AMD GPU while my Sharp is powered by the Intel GPU. Still lags.

Do you have to use ohm resistors to make the dummy plug? Or can I just use a paper clip?

I just deal with the desktop lag and use my laptop. If I'm gaming I turn intensity down to 14 and it still hashes at a little over half the rate while giving me acceptable FPS in game.

Coin updates:
LTC still dependably "silver" to BTC's "gold".
Doge in the doghouse but holding steady around 0.0000006. Still profitable.
EAC had a crazy surge today - if you bought yesterday and sold today you made a lot of BTC.
CAT is still lame. Will be interesting to see if it rises in price after difficulty spikes.
MOON launches tomorrow. Anyone's guess how this one will do.

It seems to work just fine, and my reject ratio hasn't moved at all (roughly 1%). Sometimes it lags a little, but it's not even annoying. I guess the key thing is to tweak the intensity, but it's not necessarily the only thing in the play.

You do have to use resistors of course, otherwise the plug won't work. There are no buttons in the connectors you know? You have to make some contact somewhere

I'm running out of systems to mine altcoins on.

Earthcoin's difficulty has also more than doubled since yesterday. Watch out for the 2% premine though.

I downloaded mincoin and litecoin clients, and both are syncronizing with the network. How do I go about mining?

Thanks in advance...

I haven't kept up with the altcoin craze but this is all hilarious. Great money to be made in trading though .

The question is, how does one actually trade for money? I know of Coinedup and Cryptsy, but I believe they're just "virtual" currency to "virtual" currency? Not "virtual" currency to real currency.

Once you get BTC or LTC and whatever else that can be changed into USD you're good to go on BTC-E, MtGoX etc.

BTC --> $ = MtGox.

My electric bill (western US) increased by $385/mo. Two 7950's like many others.

That is some pretty expensive bills.. $385 a month is nuts for only TWO 7950..

Cannot be correct, 600W tops for both 7950, if you pay $0.3 USD per kWh, its $4.32 a day x 30 = $129.6 a month extra.

what do you have and what type of psu do you use?
and what is your bills by the way (u.s currency).
And if you don't mind me asking how much do you make?

My buddy is interested in this and it seems interesting to me but i don't have a clue.

Since it's not regulated it's a bit scary.

How do you store your btc? I read you can use a third party or something like it or store it in your "wallet". Does that mean you just stores in the HD?

It was added to Cryptsy. Frankly, I don't see how it will survive at < 1 GH/s network hash rate and dropping. Everyone is just dumping CAT and that will lead to fewer people mining it which will eventually kill the coin.

Give it time, wasn't too long ago that Doge had less than 1 Gh/s..

I think this is the fastest coin to hit good profitability to mine ever upon release.

I've been reading about this and i'm curious about it. I would like to get into possibly but i wonder what the cost it will be to start out.

if you have a pc with a hd7850 a hd7950 a hd 7970 or a r9 280 a r9 290 or a

hd 6970 or a hd 5870 it is afree start up to mine LTC 1 ltc is about 30 usd.

what is your video card? I mention LTC because if you have a pc with a card named above built it will mine at a profit in most of the USA and Canada at the present time. shoot me a pm I would help you setup. BTC is more costly and harder to profit at the current time. Mostly because ASICs were invented to replace GPUS.
In general setting up a winning BTC mine in your home right now is not easy to do. Setting up a profitable LTC mine is easy if you already have the correct video cards.
I have 3 pc's mining at 1700Kh and pulling 600 watts an hour. It is cold in NJ so the heat of the 3 pc's is a bonus. here is a LTC calc

http://bitcoinwisdom.com/litecoin/difficulty

http://bitcoinwisdom.com/litecoin/calculator

1 hd7970 mining at 700kh right now will earn 7.4 coins in a month about 210 usd it will burn about 173 k watts of power and at my high NJ price of 17 cents a k watt that is 30 usd a month so since I have a pc with the hd7970 init I gain 180 a month.

plus free heat 173 kwatts a month is about 1200 BTU's an hour 24/7/31 IN DEC- MAR it pays me in free heat and cash. but I had the machine .
