Now can someone please answer my question about underclocking the memory on my 5830?! Why won't it go under 500Mhz?

Are you using 2 cards?I can only drop the memory to 400 on 1 card,if i drop the memory on the other card below 900 it blue screens.I use sapphire trixx to underclock the mem and overclock 1 card and adjust volts on both cards and ccc to adjust the clocks on the other

Are you using Sapphire Trixx? If not, use that.

That was indeed all it took. Some weird behavior initially, but now at 985/300 getting ~297Mh/s @ 70C with 75% fan speed. Knocked a good 3-4 degrees off the temps. I'll take it.

Thanks all.

It's a bug with 6 series cards and openCL. If you have a 5 series you can mine and game and run flash all without any issue, other than slightly lower performance. -f120 will minimize the performance penalty.

If you try to play a 3d game while mining on a 6970 or similar, your computer will lockup. If anyone has a fix for this I'd love to hear it.

My 6870 will crash if I have guiminer running and am watching youtube videos. However, I can play games just fine using -v -w 128 -f 120

I was able to get the RAM to 300 by setting it as low as possible, closing and reopening the program, then I could set it slightly lower, and I would keep closing and reopening moving it down as far as I could each time, and after a few cycles I got it to 300. (this is with a 5830 and Afterburner)

Interesting. My 6970 would crash if I ran league of legends or world of warcraft while mining, even at -f128. Really hoping for a driver update to fix this issue in 11.7

Don't really get this argument. Are you unnerved knowing that the USD you earn at your real job may have been involved in cocaine deals? or that they will be in the future?

Are drug deals going to stop happening without BTC? Are there really a bunch of people who are buying drugs because of BTC?

Personally, and I say this from past experience, I would be more worried about a BTC transaction that had to be handled through US mail than having my regular trusted* pot dealer stop by the house with an order.

* Yes, trust is a relative term.

The difference is that I'm not the guy making the dollar bills... and even if I was, I would have a lot more confidence that my money was being used for a legal purpose most of the time.

My 6970 crashes if I start a flash video or youtube. I have since blocked flash in IE so I can download podcasts & videos without fear of crashing. Opera runs fine for when I want to watch videos with my card turned off.

What's the difference between -f128 and -f120?

Someone told me f stands for "frames", but I don't really know. All I know is the higher f is the less priority mining gets, and the more GPU resources are usable for other purposes, such as games. I like working in powers of 2, so I picked 128, but it's probably about the same as 120.

f0 = maximum priority, f120 or f128= very low priority.

Newegg.com briefly had 5830s in stock again. I think I bought the last 8, but there is a note that they will get more on July 4th.

Well if it makes you feel better I've used my BTC to buy hardware and get work done on my car after converting to USD.

BTC is just a tool and like all tools it depends on how the users utilizes it.

basicly will take you 90 days to recover cost on a mining setup unless you already have the hardware . anything can happen inbetween that period. there is also increase of difficulty which will happen which means more decrease in amount of bitcoins per day

not really worth it to start, unless you already have the hardware to do so (rigs with cards already, or rigs that can fit more cards).

do you have a system and psu you are willing to run 24/7?
do you already have an amd (juniper, cypress, barts, cayman)video card?
do you have enough disposable money to live without $1000 for 3+ months?

if the answer is no to the questions above, you probably shouldnt think about mining. otherwise .....

cost of system
cpu: cheapest will do.
mb: multiple pcie slots req'd (x16 and x1 x1 will do.)
ram: minimum will do
psu: 800+ watt high efficiency with at least 4 pcie plugs, 6 is better.
dvd/external drive to install os: optional
os: free if linux (way more configuring to get mining) or cost of windows lic.

cost of cards
any 58xx/68xx/69xx card will do, but at $200-360 per card the return ratio goes way down. that is why 5830 @ $110 is the bargain.
3 cards is probably minimum now. if you can even find them for sale.

cost of electricity.
depends on your area and weather(ac over summer)

--take total hash rate of video cards https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison
--apply to calc http://www.alloscomp.com/bitcoin/calculator.php
--assume difficulty will increase and multiply weekly profit by .66 to get next weeks profit. do same for following week.

go online and price out the bolded items. find out return rate and diminishing profit schedule. find break even point in terms of weeks/months.
Decide if return rate is acceptable over time period you are willing to mine.

with 6 x 5830s for myself its at 1.25 coin a day with overclock of 940/340 . although i just made some improvements on software so mhash has increased on all of them

if you use six 5830 cards and one board then you need pci e risers , for powersupply two 750s would be best i think.

When i started about a month ago people were telling me it was really late to be getting started. I would have to say they were probably right, and if that was the case a month ago, it's got to be worse now because of the difficulty level.

The difficulty level has gone from around 225k to currently over 1.3M. Which means that had I been at my current level of set up when i first started, I would have been generating upwards of 12-15btc per day, which at this point is about 2 on a good day.

btc prices could go way up but they could also stagnate around $15-16 and with difficulty rising, it could take a long time to recover initial investment of hardware.

This is really the crux of the issue. At best, everyone here is speculating on the exchange rates of BTC staying at/near current levels or increasing. They could not only stagnate but could crash to pennies on the dollar and then all the estimations of profits and payback times are out the window, and you're left with the resale value of hardware and however much you invested in power. A bit dramatic as you can withdraw to USD as you go, but a newcomer should consider this before spending any hard earned fiat currency.

I am becoming less hopeful about the continuing increase of the exchange rate. The claims that it would track difficulty have not been borne out.

no one figures in the difficulty increase to their scheme.
i.e. (fixed hash rate) current week 5 coins, next week 3.4 coin, next week 2.1 coins, etc.
this wouldnt be so bad if btc prices were going up, but the 15-17 plateau right now is klling any profitability.

Anyone who chases the tail by adding more equipment to maintain their coin rate is really digging a hole for themselves. Short term isnt so bad since you can sell the rig parts since they are in demand, but once the southern island cards come out the resale value is gone as gamer cards or even mining cards.

part of the problem is miners are selling coins to buy more cards/rigs. more people selling is dropping the price of coins.
