Nobody is DDOSing any of these pools. What is happening is that a guy with 6k bots are attempting to connect to these pools and are overwhelming them. There may be more than one but for sure there is one guy with around 6k bots.

http://twitter.com/#!/BitcoinsLC/status/88346141321740288

Attempting to connect with 6000 bots in a botnet all at once. Isn't that the textbook definition of a DDOS attack?
it is a ddos

i think muyoso believes that the guy is trying to use 6k bots to mine and the pool is incidentally unable to handle the mining client requests, which is unlikely.

somebody was pool mining with a botnet and last week bguild kicked him and his bots from their pool. assuming it is the same guy he went from earning 60 GHash to 0 hash(6k x 10Mhash/s per cpu). as payback he launched a brute force ddos which goes around the whitelist setup from the last ddos on guild.
whether this is the same individual/group that has been going around launching ddos attacks on all the big pools remains unclear.

I just shake my head at these schemes. People use your power to help not hurt! There are more worthwhile things.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/scheme please read the link.

61 pages of lemmings jumping of a cliff to a horrible demise. The intellect on the forums is depressing.

We do not allow insulting other members here, more so several members all at once.

Please find a way to bring your point across without resorting to insults, as it will only encourage counter-insults and is unproductive.

More worthwhile than basically printing money? Please do share.

You and the Federal Reserve should have a talk about printing worthless money!D:
The federal Reserve are the experts at market manipulation. lets see how or what we the USA does to stem our debt ceiling.

Turn on the tv! watch world news! Get a grip educate yourself. cnn is your friend! Learn that the global economy is real!

You have already made your point regarding your dissatisfaction with / disapproval of the entire bitcoin scenario, including insulting the participants in this thread.

No need to repeat yourself over and over. All it will accomplish is derail the thread by inciting non-flattering responses towards you.

So can bitcoins actually be used to purchase legitimate goods and services? I heard about that illegal substances market, and the fact that I've heard of it probably means it's already a target for law enforcement and won't be around long.

If bitcoins can not be used to buy anything tangible, then their value is based completely on the speculator's feeding frenzy right? Over time, as the program loses "mindshare" and gets diluted by knockoffs and imitators is there anything that will continue to make bitcoins desireable? In the long run, it's bound to fail right?

What do you guys think?

edit: That's probably a long way down the line though. I can't wait to see what happens to the price of bitcoins when the major media outlets grab onto this story and Oprah and Katy Couric start talking about them. If I were one of the early adopters with a wallet full of btc I wouldn't sell them until they hit the national news.

Just my .02 on those concerned that people are selling illegal goods (drugs, etc.) to people using bitcoins.

People buy illegal things with real money everyday and it's untraceable. This doesn't make real money or bitcoins bad. If you eliminated bitcoins and money people would still trade in illegal commodities some way.

Now, if people are financing illegal activities with the bitcoin market, that's a different story. This has not been determined, or even put forward as a possibility, as far as I've seen. Until then, enjoy the little game, I say.

Yes, plenty. Through a couple different services you can spend your coins on amazon or newegg.com, which gives you some pretty broad options. They make it possible by giving you a gift card for the value you need for your transaction.

its been on the news atleast once already I beleive

and LOL at law enfocement.

it would be the feds if anyone, and its not illegal to crunch #'s.

if I found out I was helping finance terrorists I would simply NOT sell my bitcoins and keep them out of circulation

That's not the same thing. Amazon and newegg do not recognize bitcoin as a valid currency, and neither does any other vendor that I've seen. Until and unless they do, this experiment can't be successful in the long term.

I love the idea; creating a new currency in the same 'vein' as precious metals by introducing a finite supply that becomes progressively harder to acquire. The security and anonymity features are well thought out and really give btc an advantage over dollars.

But unless everyone gets on board and recognizes this as a valid currency it is bound to fail. I really don't think that's possible without the military power of a national government behind it. Right now, bitcoins have value only because speculators intend to convert them to $US. They have no value as a means of exchange for goods and services and probably never will.

If this is the wrong thread to discuss the bitcoin experiment in general, mods plz delete or move.

The whole point is that there isn't a government behind it.

I've been up to some shenanigans (coding), so I haven't been on much lately. Once I finish my programs, I may release them to the public.

With Trixx I found uninstalling the CCC panel or whatever they call it was pretty much required. Perhaps there is a way to only disable the built in AMD clock adjusting service? I couldn't be bothered to find out as Trixx seemed the best option for my card.

Thank you, that was the missing piece. When I last tried trixx & bitcoining on windows I noticed my clock speeds but more importantly fan settings would randomly vary. It was annoying, so I went back to running linux for bitcoining exclusively. Purging ccc fixes everything.

With this last bit of info I have windows fully functional as a gaming *AND* bitcoining OS. I don't have to reboot ever again. Happy days! I don't worry about security and malware at all since my wallet.dat will never see a filesystem Windows has access to and I do occasional snapshot backups of the windows partition. The 3-5 Mhash/sec I lose to running on windows are more than made up by an extra 60 mhz overclock I get with Trixx.

And yeah, the AMD drivers for Linux are still quite dire. I could still play games I'm most interested in with an NV card, but with AMD... Not quite so much.

i cant get it to work on my 5830. it just crashes or corrupts the video. it doesnt seem to play nice with amd overclock even when i turn it off. i would love to be able to squeeze another 20 Mhz out of the gpu clock.

i hit restore factory defaults and uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled the 11.6's.ccc was overriding trixx, after everything works great.I'm finally able to set both cards to 400 on the memory without a blue screen

amd overclock allows me to underclock mem to 300 easy enough after manually editing the ccc profile. but i cant set the gpu clock higher than 900. my abit ip35e board is pretty dicey on reboot but dead solid during 24/7 usage, so i'm hesitant to tinker.

then maybe consider modifying the stock bios to a higher clock speed and memory at 300

as soon as i reinstalled the driver i had full control over both cards(5850 and 5830) with trixx.850/400 and 965/400.i had the 5850 at 950 but it got to hot,i ordered an extender cable so i can separate the cards

i did try editing the profile for a higher clock, but that just locked up the machine. the profile has 3 lines for gpu clock, mem clock. first is idle target, second is probably 2d target, third seems to be current clock max. when i enter anything over 900 it just locks or corrupts the video.

i'm guessing i need to uninstall ccc and just run trixx, but i dont know if it is worth the risk given the rock solid stability on ccc.
