welcome to the new difficulty level.

edit: looks like everyone is running around like chickens with the head cut off. they're jumping around from 1 pool to the next and screwing up the share ratios.

Difficulty went up 10%, not 50%.
But yeah, it seems to be normal again.

Man even with the 5870 + 6970 running, it seems my rate has dropped considerably in the last couple days despite only a slight difficulty increase.

What's a dummy plug? Just the 75ohm resister into a DVI plug is sufficient?

This is god awfully retarded. I understand the power savings nature of these cards, but this should be a software option.

Apparently there is. The software option is 11.7 catalyst drivers

I'm hoping that we have the typical "weekend dip" in BTC value. I actually have some USD in my mtgox account and I want to pick up some of the sweet cheap $10 bitcoins.

Which 5830 do you have? I found my 100297L's to be very quiet @ 100% fan.

The Sapphires also. They're now numbered 2L, but I believe it's the same model off their website 2L or just L.

I have them stacked right next to each other running open case right now. I'm used to absolute silence.

My old 4850 which was in my i7 system ran on a Arctic Cooling Twin Turbo. I could run at 30% fan and would never hear it above my already-silent Noctua D14 cooler.

I don't upgrade GPUs very much but I remember my 4850 stock fan being whiny and the same on my 7800GT. I've always gone aftermarket cooling.

Either I have a lemon (I doubt it cuz both are loud) or I'm just too spoiled by quiet computing. Heh.

70% is a pretty good fan speed.

Also, you should look into underclocking the memory and put something in between the cards to space them a little if they're stacked against eachother.

underclocking memory to 300mhz can make a big difference w\ temps. I had one card running @ 92c last night and then put fans up and clock down and temps went to 67-70c

for my sapphire 5830 i have it set at 975/300 with stock voltage. temps is much better as well. one xfx i had to clock it down to 950/300 as it would lock up otherwise still testing this one

Yeah. Unfortunately boards back in the day only had 1 slot in between the 2 slots....

Even my X58A board I find retarded. I know they were shooting for 3 way SLI and stuff, but they always did:

PCIE x16
Junk
PCIEx16
Junk
PCIex16

That means all 3 cards will be stacked against each other. The new Z68 boards leave TWO slots between the first two PCI-es, so if you do dual cards, you get optimal cooling. It's only the third card that needs to be jammed in tight. That makes so much more sense. I kept complaining about the X58 boards not doing it right but it seems Intel finally got it together for Z68.

I'll try to see what I can do downclocking the memory and what not.

I have my sapphire at 965/400 i found that at 300 my hash rate dropped

How long has it taken to get your coins transferred to MtGox? I transferred yesterday, I still do not see them. I'd hate to lose my three bitcoins.

There is absolutely NO need for video plugs or a keyboard or a monitor when running a Linux mining rig. There's no need to use a remote desktop either (although that's just as trivial as windows). I should know, that's what I do.

When the pools went down I just ssh-ed into my mining box and pointed the miners at a new pool in all of 30 seconds. If I had to do that more than once I could script it, at which point it would be the same effort to change 1, 2, or even 100,000,000,000,000 miners at at once.

Remember, Unix (and Linux) was designed as a command line multi-user OS. There was never a requirement for a monkey pounding on a keyboard while looking at a bitmap display.

With Nvidia drivers you can even run OpenCL *without* a GUI running. ATI still requires the GUI to be started, but there's no need for a monitor to see what it's displaying (in my case it's just a blank screen).

jeebus, the 5830s run hot. mine both throttle at 90c. I'm thinking of going open case... it's a noise tradeoff but at the same time cooler temps help run it quieter.

I've tried using Afterburner and Trixx, but Trixx seems to only control 1 card. You can't switch it from card to card like Afterburner? I like Trixx because you can drop to 300mhz memory down from 500mhz which is where Afterburner is capped. Either way, my 5830s are toasty... very toasty.

close AB and open it back up and u can drop it below 300mhz

What are your fan speeds set on? My 5830's run at 59c in a not well ventilated case overclocked to 1020mhz with the fan speed set at 70%.

Has anyone tried 11.7 drivers and do you know if they increase/decrease hash rates over 11.4 drivers?

Thanks

The 11.7 drivers slightly increase hashes over 2.4 sdk, and they're almost even with 2.1 sdk. Good news if you have the 6 series card. No-op for 5 series.

This is a comparison under Windows. 2.6 sdk isn't out for Linux until the 15th of july.
