You don't want to run your fans at 100%. You will burn them out quite quickly. They are not designed to handle that. You shouldn't have to run your fans greater than 70% to stay in safe operating ranges. 60-65% should be more than enough. If you do have to run them that fast you are pushing your cards too hard or your ambient temp is too high.

I would love to see some empirical evidence showing that running a fan at it's rated voltage continuously shortens its life vs running it at @ rated voltage but controlling speed using PWM.

I am seriously thinking about giving this a try. So with the current bitcoin market, what kind of production could I expect to get out of my 2 unlocked 6950s? Any guesses what I could expect running full bore 12-16 hours a day?

^^I'd say 750ish MHash depending on clock speed. One BTC every 3-4 days.

750 mhash is something like .63 BTC per day on average.

On BTCguild, you would earn exactly .62/day after fees. I know this because BTCguild is now entirely share based earnings, so you earn at a completely consistent rate, unlike most pools where earnings are based on actual coins minted and thus random. The fees are a little higher than most pools, but I find the non-randomness to be a huge plus, I am earning my bitcoins at a very consistent rate.

So in other words, you would earn about 1 coin every other day, occasionally twice in two days, at current difficulty. Given the randomness of most pools, you might go 3-4 days without recieving a coin, but the overall average should be 1 coin per 2 days or better.

Or, at current mtgox values, $3.43 per day

That little? Granted I just started, but I've been averaging 0.2 BTC or so on 310-315 MHash/s. I hope 0.25-0.33 isn't a more realist expectation from 750 MHash/s

Common sense. Your wear quotient increases the closer you get the limits of anything that is mechanical or electrical.

I'm curious then, do you run all your case fans at less than rated voltage at all times? Running the fan with PWM is harder on the electronics than just running full out, so it's not as black and white as just saying that running 70% will extend the life of a fan.

I'd agree, if the bearings are the most likely failure mechanism of a particular fan you might get some extra life out of them by running at reduced speed. That doesn't mean that bearings are the only failure mechanism, and that the electronics in the fan aren't as likely or more likely to fail running at lower speeds. Even then, the fan should outlast the usefulness of the card. The first 120mm fan datasheet I pulled up on Digikey has life expectancy of 70,000 hours at temperature, and most 20 year old or older equipment I salvage still have the fans running like champs after running 24/7 in dusty environments.

It's definitely not a case where a user should be worried about running a fan at 100% for 10 days. If that was the case no computer that ships with case fans would last more than a year.

Will there be other people in the room that you don't want to force the fan to 80 or 100%?

No one in the room - bedroom is one room over but with both doors closed the fan won't be audible.

52% ~ 85C
55% ~ 82C
60% ~ 75C
65% ~ 73C

Don't really want to go higher than 60% I think!

Here are my updated "24/7 mining" settings for my 7970:

1210 Core, 685 Memory *assuming it is indeed 685
Real voltage: 1.111v
Fan: 60% constant
Temps: 77C
mhash: ~710

I think that is fine. I generally consider under 80C to be okay. I might pay more attention if I had any expensive mining cards such as 5970s 6990 or 7970s, but I don't worry too much when my 5930s run close to 80.

GPU-Z

I've found weird things happen if you try to run Trixx and AB at the same time.

Ah yes, GPU-Z, already had it installed but forgot about it. Thanks!

So, in AB the memory slider's set to 685 - GPUZ reports 685 but AB is still at 1375 on the graph. Safe to assume this is an AB bug?

Edit - hold on, in GPUz's first tab it says 685MHz, but under the 'sensors' tab it says 1375. Can anyone verify the same?

getting OT, let me move this question to the 7970 overclocking thread.

Since you have a few rigs set up, figured I'd ask you. Is there a way to set up a script or something that will send me an email when mining has stopped for any reason?

I think BTC Guild will send you a warning if a rig stops reporting.

there's also an android/ios mtgox app that will do that. will tell you what your hash is for each pool your involved with and current/hi/low 24 hour trading.

BTC Guild allows you to have it set up for each miner on one account... i like it.. i wish deepbit had something like that.

i use Deepbit as a primary and BTC as a backup (BTC seemed to be going down alot more than deepbit at one point)

It's been a while now since the Bitcoin craze began... Is there a better Miner for NVidia GPUs now, or are they still basically pointless?

Pretty much pointless, but no harm trying with your current card... https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Why_a_GP...U#Why_are_AMD_GPUs_faster_than_Nvidia_GPUs.3F

BTC Guild looks interesting, is it worth switching from bitcoin.cz?

I haven't figured out what to do with the BTC that is accumulating in bitcoincz (they have max threshold of 20BTC before payout), don't know where to send it to or how/what to use it on yet. I haven't signed up for an mtgox account either...

What's the formula to calculate .62/day with 750mhash?

I divided my mhash by the current rate I was getting and then multiplied by 750. I guess it might not be exact, depending on how BTCguild measures everything, but it should be close to accurate- until the next difficulty change.

There are ways but I haven't actually set anything up myself. Other than BTCguild, I have started mining with https://eclipsemc.com - what interested me about them is 0 fees for BTC, and the option to withdraw directly in Paypal USD (with some exchange fee). I know they have an option to send you a txt message on your phone, or an email, if something happens to one of your miners.

I mostly just check in with the pools, make sure the current estimated mhash shown is what it should be, if it's dropped it's my signal to check my miners.

Can someone help me with diablo miner? It's not very intuitive. My 6870 is mining on it but I lost 30 MH/s compared to Guiminer. How do I enter in the appropriate flags?
Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out. How do I tell it to use two GPUs though?

-D 1
-D 2

that's how... that's if you are running two scripts... if you are running one script... Diable miner will recognize both and run both

you'll see a (#1) or (#2) at the end of a line when a block is accepted

Does bitcoin mining generate enough internet traffic to make your ISP think you're running torrents 24/7? Thinking of giving this a try with a spare PC if I spruce it up a little with a decent graphics card. Only has an Intel 478 cpu, tho. Not sure if that's good enough. Seems like this is a fairly risk-free thing to just "set and forget" (while checking it every now and then to make sure that it's running...).

I have several standard 6950's running at 900 mhz that do about 370 mhash apiece. At the current difficulty, each card does roughly 1/4 of a bitcoin per 24 hour period.

no, it uses a tiny amount of traffic. You could do it over dialup.

My OCed (860/200) _locked_ 6950s get 350MH/s. I get about 2.9 coins/day with my total hashing power (~3700MH/s) at the current difficulty.

So you should get about 0.37 coins (maybe a bit higher if you OC your unlocked 6950s) running 16 hours a day.
