Looks like I missed the boat on Catcoin. Difficulty 64 and rising.

It's just a copycat of Dogecoin isn't it? I'm not that interested in Catcoin for the time being.

CAT is a copycat (lol) of Bitcoin except in scrypt. 21 million coin limit, same block rates, etc. I decided I'd shift 4MH/s over to CAT while the difficulty is still 64.

Well, I'm going to try this again - I don't expect it, but in case anybody wants to pitch a few NXT my way (again?), it seems my current password is generating the same address each time now. I really don't have the slightest idea what happened before, but the password I used absolutely did not generate the same address as I initially posted. I'm wondering if it's an issue with the client, since if I leave it running for a while it simply stops responding as well. Either way, I've made sure that I can log in to the same wallet repeatedly this time around and the passphrase is in Keepass for cut 'n paste.

Yes, this is exactly what makes Catcoin great, mining profit will be more consistent and predictable than Dogecoin.

After trying this NXT, it seems like nonsense to me. The whole premise is too ambiguous and I think there is more value to a coin that requires generation via GPUs or ASICs, rather than some welfare web interface that sits there doing nothing..

That's assuming the value takes off. I'm finding the client to be... boring compared to Dogecoin. I'm not sure it's going to have much "success" as a jokecoin, because unlike Doge it isn't funny.

I don't see lack of meaningless work as lack of added value.
Overall stage of software and exchange system is the problem.

At this stage they are basically doing a blind auction. And you can trust them or not. Things should clear once they release code.

But the problem that will remain is concentration of "wealth", and huge market cap. If any of bigger players decide to cash out, devaluation is imminent

I might be a bit too optimistic about Catcoin. Correct me if I am wrong, even without the LOLZ factor, Catcoin is the first pure Bitcoin copycat that is exactly identical to Bitcoin besides the Hashing algorithm. As a miner, I have waited for this for a long time, I am sure quite a few of other miners also think so. Actually I am calling Catcoin "Scryptcoin" in my mind. So initially Catcoin will get some strong support for at least quite a while, along with being the arch-rival of Dogecoin, it is not looking too bad.

It strikes me that a number of folks participating and thus perpetuating the alt joke coins are sowing the seeds of their own and others destruction as far as crypto mining goes.

For it not to be a joke,.. it needs not to be trampled on like it's a joke.

I hope the joke coins pass, but this doesn't happen if a large group of folks try to get rich of them repeatedly. It certainly does not add any legitimacy to the crypto currencies in general.

I'm getting a java.lang.NullPointerException error whenever I open the localhost page for NXT forging. It was working fine, doesn't seem to be anymore.

Anyone know what the problem could be?

^^^ I agree.

Things like dogecoin, catcoin, etc. I have no idea why speculators are even spending money on them. All they're doing is making miners rich. It's sort of like welfare for virtual currency.

Things like WorldCoin, SexCoin, LottoCoin and to a much lesser extent EarthCoin... coins that actually have a business plan, venture capital or a particular purpose behind them on the other hand... I can see a viable use for them on the market.

If you cannot see, that's why you aren't filthy rich speculating the markets! Anything can be traded as long as there's profit to be had!

Do most people care about any coin's intrinsic value? Nope. The only thing that matters: PERCEIVED value. Perception is everything. This is why joke coins like Doge and soon, Catcoin will fly.

"A fool and his (virtual?) money are soon parted." :whiste:

I suppose.

People pay money for Dota 2 couriers and other in-game items with no intrinsic value, only perceived value (looks "cool").

Perception IS reality in the age of the Internet, for better or for worse. It's how companies like Twitter and LinkedIn can have sky high valuations based on perception.

Why do people perceive Catcoin as being valuable? And what kind of valuation are you guessing at?

I had the same error message with 0.4.4 client.

In the cmd box do you get a Java.IO.EOFException (or something like that)?

It could be your blockchain is borked. You'll want to backup your current client somewhere, then download the latest client 0.4.7e and let that redownload the blockchain and transaction info. After I did that, I was good to go.

Hope that helps.

I just started using CGWatcher and it's AWESOME! Thanks a ton to whoever mentioned it here.

On a side note, I noticed there's exactly zero difference in hashrate between intensity 18 and 19 on my 5850 (but I assume it applies universally). There is one slight difference: it's more stable and less laggy.

Thank you for the NXT. Got it this time for sure.

On the other side of the mining fence, I finally broke the 1MHash/s barrier. 2x 6950s and a GTX660. I need a new PSU before I can throw my other 6950 in the machine.

Speaking of cards, what would you recommend if as little noise and heat and price were the key factors? I am thinking about adding discrete GPU in my wife's PC because I am fed up with 1st gen Core graphics, and thought I could add a little bit to my hashrate at the same time. In other words, mining would only be a bonus, not the goal.

Maybe a radeon 7790. I'm actually about to start using it again to mine ltc, so I'll let you know how it works. As I recall, it was fairly quiet and didn't use too much power even when mining bitcoin, yet it was still powerful enough to be somewhat relevant- though obviously not nearly as fast as the current top of the line cards.
