This is quite interesting: cudaminer dev is in the process of implementing scrypt-jane and says it is faster on NV than AMD. There's only a few coins using this algorithm right now, though maybe more will adopt it once regular scrypt ASICs start hitting the market? Since for smaller coins, not being ASIC resistant makes it easy for someone with a lot of power to take over the network.

there have been some updates, but they don't warrant a new release yet. scrypt-jane isn't quite finished, but once it is it will give nVidia users an edge over AMD/ATI users.

I wouldn't be surprised if scrypt-jane is faster on NV since it's supposed to be a CPU miner in the first place.

The only concern is whether cudaminer can sustain scrypt-jane, since once the block number grows, its more efficient to mine on CPU's.

As for why I say the XFX is quite possibly the single worst card... XFX 7970 DD (which is basically the same as their 280X) was the single worst 7970 for scrypt mining, bringing < 490 kH/s with its stock configuration and overheating. I had a revision I could flash to a different BIOS so I did that and promptly sold the card. Worst. Mining. Card. Ever.
I've had some stability issues with my XFX 7970 DD's, but I'm currently running 2 cards at 730kH/s each (with a bit of tweaking). Temperatures are low 80's however, and I'm pretty sure I can't unlock the voltage on the cards to lower it slightly.

all the coins are taking off now. Is it because zynga said they'll accept bitcoins. I think btc went up over $100 today and ltc is starting to really rise.

Catcoin and Dogecoin value on Coinedup and Cryptsy is continuing to drop. I think it's value got cut in half in one week? Could be even less than one week..

Never underestimate CAT, its got 9 lives!

Sold the two BTC I accumulated over the past couple months for $2000 yesterday. Lol, free money - the power costs. Now to find something to blow it on. I'm thinking a nice cappuccino machine.

With the prices as they are now I think for mining LTC is the best bet again.

I really want to sell mine, but worried about opening a can of worms with taxes.

So litecoin difficulty on pace to be up over 40% over roughly a 7 day period. On Dec 30 it was ~2900 and by wendsday it could be 4200+....

Price is up ~30% over that period.

What, you're saying that a pump and dump coin based off of a stupid meme isn't worth anything anymore? Color me shocked!
Its still more profitable to mine doge than litecoin. Supply and "demand" will eventually pull all highly valued coins down, even if the demand is only from speculators and "highly valued" is only in relation to the cost to mine them.

The alternate currency forums over at bitcointalk are scary. Too many stupid coins to keep up with.

Doge is still a bit more profitable than LTC if you pump and dump continuously but it won't be for much longer (maybe not even tomorrow) if it keeps falling while LTC goes up in value even with the crazy difficulty increases.

I pretty much just try to follow coinwarz and pump and dump as I go. Fastcoin was pretty promising but the rounds are so short that getting consistent shares is hard.

Difficulty is growing by leaps and bounds; it's already been rising steadily for a week, and right now it's projected to rise another 11.54% as of the time of this post. ~1.6% is the breakeven point for a 7970 to pay for itself assuming typical PC build and electric prices, so 11.54% is really bad news. But if you think coin prices will grow more than ~50% this year, you are better off buying coins directly and simply holding them rather than getting a trickle of coins and paying monthly power bills.

Right now difficulty is rising from GPUs, but scrypt ASICs are in production and we're probably only a few weeks or months away from seeing the first batches impact difficulty. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=355268.0

Mine and sell as you go is what you mean. "Pump and dump" means someone buying a lot of something (in this case, a coin) and then trying to get other people to buy it too, then if the price goes up, quietly selling the coin, leaving the new buyers with a bunch of devalued coins. You see a lot of that crap on online forums. Btw, sites like coinwarz calculate instantaneous numbers but price and difficulty and trading volumes vary wildly over time, so be very careful assuming that mining the top coins is worth it. Many times what is no. 1 now will be no. 18 later in the day, as an example. Due to transaction fees/exchange fees, higher stales/orphans, scammer or hacked pools etc. it's possible to make less mining altcoins than straight up LTC even if the altcoin looks more profitable on paper.

60K/s As in 60 Kh/s?

Is that a typo?

Not a typo. Initial batch estimated at 60 kH/s for 4-5 watts, though later batches are more like 84 kH/s. That's per chip, with multiple chips per PCB board.

Say they stick 20 of them on one PCB. How would you like 1680 kH/s for 90 watts? It's 6 times as efficient as GPUs. Granted memory takes wattage too so overall it may end up being only ~5 times as efficient. These are first-generation ASICs though and meant to do both BTC and LTC mining. A truly specialized LTC ASIC will probably be even more efficient.

Any chance I could build a cheap i3 system with a video card and have the video card pay off in a month? Lets say I built one right now, whats the cheapest build I can make that will pay off my upgrades with in a few months time?
