Can you say "self fulfilling prophecy"??? Kind of ironic that crytek abandoned the PC exclusive platform because they claimed piracy was so bad, and now this happens. If one wanted to be cynical, they could say it was karma coming back to bite them.
However, I am strongly against piracy, and the pirating of the game makes me angry because it is just another reason for developers to justify abandoning the PC platform. Personally, I am not interested in the game, so I would not buy it anyway, unless it is for sale very cheap in a year or two.
Could not they at least add a patch that would prevent multiplayer use of the pirated game??

Er, I think if anything, this would justify them leaving PC as their focus. Now, if this was the 360 or PS3 version that was leaked you'd have a point.

I think it could be a PR stunt.

The people who will pirate the game will do so regardless of whether or not it is in Beta or Release status. By distributing the game to the web they'll be able to check for bugs and other potential issues while gaining the sympathy of PC gamers. When Crysis 3 comes out for PC, Crytek will be seen in a new light like Valve or Blizzard- a company that is still sticking out for PC gaming.

Just my 2¢

It'll also muddy the waters in the Torrent world as to which is the Beta and which is the real McCoy once the Official version is released.

I would think that beta versions would be denoted with the word 'beta'. but who knows, that sounds like a stupid idea

At this point, I'd say the jungle is every bit as cliched/tired of an environment as any other. There have been a lot of games in the jungle, albeit few if any anywhere close to Crysis, but then maybe they'll take up the destroyed cityscape up a notch as well. That city looks pretty green from vegetation to me.

The "ruined city/destroyed, metropolis/urban environment" has been done MANY, MANY more times than true jungle or forest environments in first person shooters. It's not even close.

Personally, I'd rather have an OPEN urban/metro area over the jungle. You know, like maybe go into buildings, go up stair wells, go to roof, etc... The problem with games that did this in the past is that it was linear. A path was artificially blocked off because it 'wasn't the way you were supposed to go" Heck, it looks like I could move that box and jump over that fence to get there, but nope, I can't because an invisible wall is blocking me despite me being able to jump high enough to clear it.

Now, we all know why devs do this, it is easier to code a linear script and path. But it still doesn't make it any less annoying. Maybe Crytek will have more open environments, allowing any number of paths to advance to the next point. They did this with the jungle, but can they do this in an urban environment? Not sure...

Yep, I was thinking the same exact thing as you here. It wasn't karma, it just proved that they made the right decision.

First post from the Crysis blog says it best:

Well, don't blame the PC community. Console games get leaked way before release too. Just look at the last two Halo games. They were both leaked in the summer before their release. If you want to pin the blame on someone, pin it on the employee that leaked it. A developer beta build of a game is not something that just appears on torrent sites.

Really at this point it's just a crutch to blame PC users as a whole for the company's lax security. They either had a bad apple employee leak it, someone hacked their servers or the game is so underwhelming they are coming out with excuses as to why there won't be a Crysis 3 on the PC.

Seriously, Crytek is a relatively new developer who started on the PC and has done well enough financially with this platform to be able to broaden their offerings to consoles.

One has to wonder if this would actually cause any decrease in sales when it is finally released.

There a probably a few groups of people who would download it

#1 People who hadn't really paid attention to Crysis and just saw the headlines and decided why not download it. These people probably wouldn't have bought it in the first place, and will now either not buy because they have a free unfinished version (and maybe pirate the final version later), or just didn't like it. Or they like it and decide to get the finished version. Worst case for this group they don't lose any customers. Best case, they get more paying customers.

#2 Mildly interested people who might have been planning to buy it, and who downloaded it. This group has the highest potential for lost customers.

#3 Fans of the game who downloaded it because they love everything Crysis and want to see more of it. The majority of this group (unless the game is complete trash) will go out and buy the final version anyway.

Oh, and think of all the free publicity they just got. I had no idea that Crysis 2 was coming out soon(ish), I still don't have any plans to get it, but now I know it exists.

All in all, I doubt it will make a big dent (if at all) in their profits

Yeah, to be honest, I really enjoyed Crysis even though I'm not a huge FPS fan. It just had a fairly fun cinematic feel to it and when Crysis 2 was announced, I was really looking forward to it. In the days since, I have mostly forgotten about it and this leak has now reinvigorated my interest. I still most likely won't pay retail price, I'll wait for a Steam sale.

I understand what you are saying. I was being somewhat facetious. However, piracy doesn't seem to keep Blizzard from producing PC exclusives.

Although I never got into the game, it was extremely disappointing to see a developer that made a state of the art PC exclusive abandon the platform so quickly and not only that, publicly rip it about piracy and say they would never make another PC exclusive.

Gotta love Cryteks last sentence from this, bunch of bullshit
http://www.ea.com/crysis-2/blog/crysis-leak
"Piracy continues to damage the PC packaged goods market and the PC development community."

Piracy does hurt. There are people out there that will pirate games instead of purchase them. Same thing with film and music. Its fucking pathetic. If there was no such thing as piracy they would purchase the games. If you think that pirates wouldn't purchase regardless you are kidding yourself probably to make yourself feel better about your own piracy.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to be a creative professional in this climate? It fucking sucks and only those steeled and hardened will survive.

I've heard that running it in dx9 mode limits all settings to "medium" quality. I guess that would explain some of the screenshots.

I don't think anybody is saying that ALL pirates wouldn't pay even if you couldn't download it. A lot of people download way more stuff than they'd ever think of buying, because why not? If I'm not paying for something and all it costs me is the time to download it, then you get people that download as much as they can even if it might not be that good of a game. If they couldn't do that and had to pay, they'd be a lot more selective. You can't just assume they'd buy the same shit they downloaded. There are plenty of people that simply can't afford to buy their games. That doesn't justify downloading it, they just shouldn't be playing it at all. My point is you're flat out wrong when you say "if there was no such thing as piracy they would purchase the game." True for some, definitely not true for all.

It's been said time and time again and people still aren't getting it... a downloaded copy does NOT always mean a lost sale

**Shakes Fist** at Pirate Downloaders and the person/people who leaked Crysis 2... these people are costing millions of dollars in sales that could have been put back into stimulating the economy from consumer spending!!! Now it'll take a bit longer for the economy to recover...:'(

You must work for the MPAA and RIAA to post such drivel.
