r_displayinfo = 0 (if you want to check fps, set it to 1)

r_GeomInstancing = 1
r_sunshafts = 1
r_UsePom = 1
e_terrain_normal_map = 1
r_UseNormals = 1
r_shownormals = 1

This activates all the nice parallax occlusion mapping for a lot more detail on the ground and the sunshafts are activated. I don't think anymore than this is really needed. The DX10 water functions look a little ridiculous with their giant waves even in shallow waters and the deeper DX10 shadow stuff I can surely live without.
With this activated and all on high I get 20-30 fps on 1440x900 on my machine. It's very playable and beautiful as paradise.

Oh and a reply to the guy who thinks HL:EPISODE 2 has a good story:
Where is it?
You wake up, run around some minutes with Alex, who then dies and you have to wade through some caves to find a herb to help with the weird reviving ceremony. Then you reunite with her and run to get some data to another rebel HQ somewhere in russia. You manage to close the portal over City17 (why didn't it close when the gigantic explosion wasted the citadel, I thought that was the whole point?)
And then as a stupid cliffhanger Alex father dies. (which makes no sense whatsoever. Why are there dozens of friendly vortegons at some remote site but not at the rebel HQ?)
It is hinted that there is a missing science freighter somewhere. where you will find a portal gun which probably falls in the wrong hands in Ep3 and another portal is opened.

Still nothing about the combine's motives, no further plot points or arc for the G-Man, no evolution of the state of the world, more scientists who all worked at Black Mesa (yeah right).
It's just a giant paper chase with physics puzzles and lots of linear corridor driving. I really think they should drop the whole "Freeman has no legs, no arms and doesn't talk-approach. It's getting silly. Half-Life to me is similar to 24. The first two seasons were great and then you realized the makers don't have the balls to tell a real story and just repeat over and over again.

If you paid any attention to the character conversations you would get the story out of it. If you missed it it's not my fault and there is various plot guides on the net for you.

But the game crawls with v-sync on, so i reverted back to the latest certified nvidia drivers instead of the "Crysis nvidia drivers" and it runs much better with v-sync disabled.

Thnx MtnDew. I never installed the "Crysis" drivers, so I think I'm stuck with trying the Vsync option.

My expectations aren't very high with the 8500GT card I have in my system now since it's already chugging when I try playing LOTR Online at 1440x900 on High settings with DX10.

This maybe a stupid question but, how do I know if DX10 is enabled? Im running everything on high settings and not too impressed so far. Is DX10 not enabled? Thanks.

default is DX10. If you can select very high you are in DX10. Also, it won't use DX9 unless you tell it to.

if you run under Vista you use DX10 by default. Put everything on very high to see the real DX10 effects and graphics.

I just finished the demo ... with everything set at high, WinXP DX9, 1680x1050 ... never experienced a slowdown or stutter. Going back to play in the sandbox now

Ridiculous. I don't want to derail this further but I know Half-Life in and out.
If you need a plotguide or wiki to understand a game its just stupid.

I know there are newspapers and other hints in HL2 telling the backstory of the seven hour war blablabla
But limiting themselves with a body- and speechless Freeman is just the dumbest thing they could do.
Trust me. The whole "earth under attack by combine" and Freeman is used by mysterious G-Man"-plot will never be resolved. Not in HL2:Ep3 and not in HL3. It's their cash cow, they will milk this story as long as they can.

Guess why they introduced the new scientist in Ep2? So they could kill of Alex Dad and still have the handful of characters guiding you from one corridor puzzle to the next.
It's basic TV series stuff. And not the good kind where they have plotted out the whole thing.
It will end like the X-files did. Very strong beginning and then it will overstay it's welcome and fade away.
Valve needs to innovate soon, otherwise they will kill their cow.

Is anybody else getting terrible input lag? I've changed graphics setting and disabled the logitech driver, but there's still at least a second delay between my keyboard and the movement. Mouse look works perfectly though.

Well, I hope you guys are having fun, because I can't get the game to run right. The menus and everything work fine, but once I get into the actual game, I get major issues with textures missing and everything being out of place. For example, at the first cutscene, I'm guessing you're in an airplane (because of the scene afterwards where you're falling to the water), all I can see is eye balls floating in black space, and some green text on what I guess is some kind of PDA or something. Sound comes through fine. Once I fall into the water, textures are messed up all over, and I can see what looks to be a very faint outline of rocks and a palm tree leaning to the right. Everything is kind of flickering, it's a complete and utter mess.

I had some old forceware drivers on, so I download the latest WHQL drivers from the nvidia website. Those didn't change anything, so I read about and downloaded the 169.01 "crysis" beta drivers, and those have had absolutely no effect also. Unless there's some magic fix, I'm not going to be enjoying the demo like everyone else. This is one of the main reasons I've given up on PC gaming, it's just too much of a damn hassle.

I'm running a Core 2 Duo @ 2.7, 7800GT, 2GB RAM, Vista Ultimate.

Well, I had some time today, so I took the time to do a clean uninstall of any and all nvidia graphics drivers from my system. I then reinstalled the 169.01's, and now Crysis runs fine. I had to run at 1024x768 with everything on low to get a smooth framerate that I liked, but it still looks pretty damn good. I can only imagine what it looks with a monster system.

I started it up and ran it at 1920x1200 on medium settings and it ran great. I have a BFG 8800. I thought I would have to upgrade my cpu but I'm glad I don't.

The 169.01 drivers actually kill my performance...it's pretty weird, all settings on medium with the 169.01s runs slower than a half medium/half high mix with the older WHQL drivers.

I'm doing a redown load in case there was an issue there but the game installs fine - loads up the initial game play screen and gets past the loading splash - then in 3 seconds it locks

it doesn't 100% freeze my system as I can still alt-tab out and close the game but it freezes the game 100% similar to me being stuck in an endless loop (but usually can't get out of those)

any suggestions?

Yeah...

I'm gonna go down to a not OC'd setting and reinstall off the fresh down load

Shouldn't make an issue as these current setting pass memtest and two 8 hour orthos runs

I get bad input lag if I try to run at any resolution other than the native res of my LCD.

anyone know how motion and DOF blur are implemented? i got both of those in the beta (DX9 card here) but not in the demo

edit - found them: under post-processing

double edit: editing the cvars to enable DOF and motion blur on DX9 do not work (at least not with an X850XT)

Well....just an update for anyone having problems running in Vista64. I couldn't get the game to run even if I forced v-sync on from the Nvidia control panel so i went over to the Crysis message boards and at least found a way to get it to run.

Going directly to the Crysis directory, there are a couple folders, one for 32bit and 64bit operating systems. Apparently, selecting DirectX9 by clicking on the Crysis link in the games folder isn't enough to get the game to run in 32bit mode. Go to the 32bit folder, and run the Cyrsis.exe file from there. It worked and I finally got through the introduction and landed on the beach. Then it was time for bed. However, I'm not sure if i was running the game in DirectX9 or 10...

Hmmm... I think I am. I'll double check when I get home. I'll update a bunch of drivers and such too which I haven't had time to make sure are current.

The thing is it runs fine for a minute or so with no lag, then it starts.
