I've got orange box through Steam.

HL series with it has been buggy as hell with AI_Disabled bugs and a plethora of others, although I think the effects are amazing.

Is CS:Source worth it? Lots of free mods that are available for online play?

Is it worth the money?

I've been playing CS:Source pretty much since it came out. I'm kinda addicted. I'm not even playing with my own Steam account (a friend let me have his after he got HL2 and stopped playing it), but if I had to, I would pay for it over and over. I'm on the brink of paying for admin for my clan's pub server, too. I say it's worth the money. I definitely prefer it over the $40 I paid for CoD4, even though CoD is a great game. CS is just better.

I don't think CS Source is very n00b friendly. The guys that play are all ridiculously good and/or are cheating.

At this point in time I have to agree. It's been out for so long that you need to be prepared to be worked over for a while before doing well.

Exactly. If op can get over being frustrated for a while, then it is a good game.

Yeh, they are good. I get slaughtered in it and COD4 repeatedly. I do / did well in Battlefield 2 though.

I still prefer Source over COD4. I slaughter equally in each game but I grew tired of COD4 in like 2 weeks. I still play Source after 3 years...

If you like Team Based Multiplayer, Yes. Like others mentioned though, you'll need to work at getting good at it. You need to be a little more Tactical and not treat it as DM too much. While dead and waiting for the Round to end, consider what you could have done differently and stick with your Teammates even hang back behind them. Don't block freakin Doorways, especially if the Team is trying to Rush. Once the Rush begins, you go and you don't stop just because you're about to die!!

This. I originally bought HL2 so I could get CS:S. It provided many hundreds of hours of fun and frustration over the years. Lots of good times to be had, but be prepared to get owned for the first few weeks.

yeah, if you stick with it, you will end up getting good and then get to have people accuse you of cheating. then you'll get disgusted and stop playing for a few months, lose your skills and start all over again.

still a fun game though. definitely a classic.

Well since I already have TF:2 and since steam blows at giving me some good customer support concerning my HL:2 bugs I think I might go spend 30 bucks on the Dawn of War Platinum pack. I played the DoW demo and it is a pretty good game much to my suprise.

I'll say this, I play TF2, CoD4, battlefield, and alot of FPSes. I'm usually on the top or in the top 3. I tried to play CS, and it was just ridiculous. I just played terrible, I'd get killed the instant I saw someone with a headshot or AWP, I could rarely if ever get a shot off. Just a frustrating game. Maybe I just really, really suck at it.

I occasionally play CS:S but I have a policy of ONLY going to NO-AWP servers. In my experience, any server that doesn't outright prohibit the AWP turns into an all-AWP server where no one can go anywhere or do anything. It's such a retarded gun.

Same here. The AWP absolutely ruins the game for me.

That said, I also have not really played CS since TF2 came out, but CS can be a tonne of fun if you are on a decent server.

I play fairly often. CS:S came as part of a HL2 Holiday pack a couple years back. It's fun, but as others said the learning curve can be steep. If I didn't already own it, I wouldn't go out and buy it I don't think.

people like you two are part of the reason I stopped playing.

Yea, me and a friend used to play together a lot. We'd often get banned for having scores that were "too good" (62-1 on cs_assault anyone?)

If you get it, I suggest starting out on gungame servers. Basically, everyone starts at glock and you have to make a kill with the gun you are given before you advance to the next one. You get lots of practice with the various weapons, and its not as easy to be killed in the earlier rounds. Also, many gg servers also allow you to level up by knifing someone. It great practice with the knife. My clan runs a couple of GG servers. And were noob friendly!

Yeah, I don't bitch at people about being AWP-whores. I just don't like it so I avoid games where everyone has an AWP. If only one guy has one it doesn't bug me that much - the problem is when I join a server with 40 or so people and over half of them are AWPing. And as long as you're allowed to purchase the gun, a good half of the people will, thus my earlier comment about most servers being either no-AWP or all-AWP. It's rare that I come across a server where AWPs are allowed but only a few people are actually using them.

I agree with most here that CS:S is definitely not newb/noob friendly. I have been playing CS since 1.5->1.6->Source so I have acquired some "skill" but someone just starting would be killed left, right, and center. My advice would be to practice with bots first (which was what I did back in 1.5). CS is unique in that it's not totally unrealistic like UT/Quake but is far from being realistic although it attempts to be/others claim it to be.

My advice would be to try the game at a friend's house before buying. CS:S, although fun and still fun for those like me who've played it for years, is frankly getting old and unless you're into some custom mods like gungame, there are other titles out there offering many more play styles. Actually, I find myself playing CS only because there are still large quantities of servers and I've gotten good at it. Frankly, I've had more fun with Quake 3 and Rune - but those games have come and gone; CS is still around.

When I build my new rig, I think I'll move onto some other multiplayer FPS.
