I have been playing CS since 1.5->1.6->Source so I have acquired some "skill" but someone just starting would be killed left, right, and center. My advice would be to practice with bots first (which was what I did back in 1.5). CS is unique in that it's not totally unrealistic like UT/Quake but is far from being realistic although it attempts to be/others claim it to be.

Yeah, I remember thinking it was "realistic" when it first came out. It's really not, but the accuracy penalty for movement does a great job of slowing the game down and forcing at least some kind of strategy. I got good at the game back when it was 1.6; about a year ago, I picked up source, but couldn't get good enough to score more than a random kill here and there. Not sure if it was cheating or if people really are just that good now, but it doesn't really matter.

i first played cs when beta 3 was released and am still playing with cs:s today. from '99 to '08, that's almost 10 years.

it's definitely worth playing if you can cease some frustrations. i'm used to frustrations because you'll see them daily.

i love how i dodge bullets and kill them with shotgun. they go, "OMFG YOU HAX!" and leave the server or ban me if they were admins.

I've gotten my fair share of hacking accusations throughout my CS career... usually it's when they start shooting me in the back, I jump, spin around, and instantly headshot them. Then they start crying. Either that or I'll be rushing and I'll jump in on them, hit the ground, crouch, and swiss cheese their face (often happens as T rushing back way or front stairs on Office).

If you have fast reflexes and know how to aim, CS:S isn't really difficult at all. Honestly, I play it like it's UT or Quake and can usually drop 4 by running around like a retarded monkey.

It's soooooooo much easier than 1.6. You can fire before you stop running and still have a good chance of getting the ol' HS. Also, when you go around with a rifle, you're probably going to want to stop moving for a second and strafe back and forth while bursting unless you're really close range.

CS:Source is fun when you have people to play with. IMO. I just play that game with my friends whenever we are bored.

Best game ever made, IMHO. CS:S is gaming zen. It's murder chess. Best gaming moments of my life were spent on CS:S servers with good friends during close matches.

CS:S is filled with rampant elitsim (being good at the game is all some people got, apparently). But you can find some laid back servers and have a heck of a good time. You might get frustrated because it's not like a single player FPS where you can absorb tons of bullets and just collect health packs once you've cleared a room, but that's what makes the game so good.

Doubtful. It's more likely that you kill someone with a foot or arm shot with the AWP, since any hit is an insta-kill...

It is a noob gun, plain and simple.

No.
Any hit above the waist is an insta-kill. It isn't a noob gun - it actually takes quite a bit of skill to use it properly.

Yes, mastering the AWP isn't easy, really. Sure, you can camp spawn and take easy pics but most skilled awpers, in my book, can rush with the weapon and not get shot. It's also not an easy weapon to hold when you're being gang rushed by enemies that make effective use of flash and smokes. The AWP is balanced in the sense that you have a toolchest of countermeasures (including radio communication) to confuse/disable an awper.

Avoiding obvious choke points is step one. Using stealth is key.

I'd rather have a silenced M4 and flashes and nades and a USP in close combat than an AWP.

Contributing to the AWP discussion, being good with the AWP is only half the fight. To really be a deadly awper, you need to master the art of 1) quickswitching after firing, and 2) the deagle. You can kill the entire team all you want if you camp, but to be useful with the awp, you need to learn how to rush. There are times where a guy will sneak past you and get close to you, which is where you need to pull out the deagle and get a headshot to stay alive.

There are plenty of guns that can be abused by noobs. It's just that the awp is probably the most difficult to take out for those that aren't very good. Long range shots are much harder to hit with other guns.

With the rifles people can just camp stupid corners and hit easy shots. With the SMGs, you can just run around aimlessly holding the trigger. With the awp, there are only so many spots that it's easy to pick people from. These spots can mostly be avoided or grenaded/flashed.

IMO awping is only fun if you're rushing with it. Then it's all about preaiming and reflexes.

Same here. The AWP absolutely ruins the game for me.

That said, I also have not really played CS since TF2 came out, but CS can be a tonne of fun if you are on a decent server.

KT
people like you two are part of the reason I stopped playing.

Explain please.

AWP can make some maps terribly boring.

CS:S has one of the highest replay values of any multiplayer game provided it suits you. I've logged hundreds of hours of playtime. If you haven't played it, it's not what you think it is. It's a strategic/tactical shooter. Strategy never gets boring.

If you have anger management issues I'd not advice playing.
