CS takes forever to load maps

i have winxp, athlon-C 1.4, msi k7master mobo, 512 crucial pc2100, radeon 64 vivo with 6032 drivers, 7200rpm hard drive ata100 with dma enabled and ata133 cable...

the damn maps take at least 10 seconds to load. my friend loads them in 2 secs (literally) on a p3 1ghz, 128 ram and geforce 256 sdr.

i notice a small pause before i hear the hdd noises and then it opens in a split second. whats this pause?

someone once told me that it was my ram that was delaying everythign and i had to use more aggressive timings. can anyone plz help me with the ram timings in my bios?

i dont think it would be your ram that might be just a lil bit of a delay but not a really big one

Type 'developer 1' in the console before you load a map. It will show you the individual actions being taken, and the timing behind them. Compare these to your friend's computer, also at 'developer 1.'

The pause:
It is quite possible that your video card is actually slowing things down, as the textures used by the map need be uploaded to the card.
Perhaps the Radeon is slower (or the drivers used) at uploading textures.

hmm ok but theres no way a readeon SE 64 mb DDR is slower than the original geforce 256 sdr.... 32mb... nooooo way!!

I used to have slow loading maps, I reformatted (not because of this) and installed Counter-strike first. Loads very fast now.

delete the "custom.hpk" file in your counter-strike directory. it stores all the little individual sprays and such that you download evertime someone with one connects. as it gets larger it takes up more and more space on your ram. by deleting it you'll free up the space and CS will make a new one the next time you join a server.


i usally delete mine every couple of weeks.

hmm thx for the help y'all but still no go...

second and third loads are really fast.. only first is slow... toooo slow

ive tried all the no lag tweaks and all and still takes forever.... im pretty sure its my ram settings...

I have found that cs is the only game that takes a long time to load maps....tfc loads up quick....action half-life for some reason....takes like 2 seconds....this is on a 1.2 ghz athlon...256 mesg of pc-133 ram (cas 2) and a Radeon 8500 LE
