Anyone have this monitor? What tube it uses? 1600 x 1200 91Hz seems very good to me. You can find it online also.

Wow. $300 for a 21"? CTX is usually pretty low quality, but the specs look decent. Any review outs?

I had a 17" CTX and it was a good monitor
and 300.00 for a 21" sounds like a very good price to me

Just called Sam's Club online and found out something very interesting. Seems it's only available online now and the shipping is $220! Not so hot anymore...

$220? Just for shipping? Are you serious? so it would be like $299 + $200?
That cant be right.. thats ridiculous I would drive to their warehouse and pick it up for less.

Well, the drive from CA to AK is pretty far for me.

I called and none of the Southern California stores have this monitor or can order it. Yes, it's true - $220 for GROUND shipping (up to 3 weeks for me). $520 plus tax for me.

I guess I'll look elsewhere for a cheap 21 inch monitor.

I just called Sam's Club and they told me that $220 for shipping was INCORRECT, and that they were trying to work it out with the company. They said that the problem should be resolved by the beginning of next week and to call back then. The guy also told me that this was not a quickie sale and that it would be around at that price for a while.

Concerning reviews, do a search on Google for "CTX EX1300". I found one review (at Macworld...I think) where they found the image quality to be fair but said the monitor was dim.

Mac World review was from June 1999 had it as a $1280 monitor. Cnet lists 10 vendors at $670-$799. Can not find any other reviews yet.

Wow, they gave the price in the review of $1,285. Must be an old review, I hate it when they don't give the date on articles. The best price on pricegrabber is over $600.00. For $299 seems like a great deal if that shipping situation gets worked out.

Does this thing have a flat screen? The specs say Flat Square Tube (FST), but I've seen other monitors which said FST, yet they had a curved tube.

Let's say I decide to become a Sam's club member. What's the best membership to have. And how much does it cost?

I checked their website and only one of the memberships showed how much it cost. And it was $100.00!!

I'm sure there is something cheaper, but what is the hot deal on the memberships?

If the shipping pricer comes down and the actual price doesn't go up then this is a heck of a deal.

I had a 15"CTX for five years, and my current 19"CTX for three years now. This last one went puff on me once, but I got them to fix it for free. So while I know that people hate CTX, I like it. And I'd buy it again.

So Sam's club members, what's the deal with Sam's membership?

kcobra, FST monitors are not true flat monitors like the trinitrons. They are just pretty close to flat.

WoundedWallet,

My basic membership for my wife & myself only costs about $30 a year. I go enough to more than make up for it. They often have good rebates on quite a few items (even some pc related).

I'm going tomorrow to check out my local Sam's and if they have this monitor for $299, I'm buying it.

footlambert - it's just one of the standard measurements for light (opps, they said that). I guess you can think of it as how much ambient light that the monitor is putting out compared to the surrounding environment.

little more than you might want to have known, but hey...why not...

Concering the memberships, I think there is a way to get a 'trial' membership. Either you can go to the store and request one (for a day) or find a coupon in an Entertainment-type book. I'm not sure about any of this, but I seem to recall hearing about this somewhere. Maybe someone else knows more.

As for the CTX monitor. I bought a 19" CTX VL950 in July 1999 at Sam's Club. I will never buy a CTX monitor again. It was stated earlier in the thread that they are usually pretty poor quality and I agree. I had to send it back for rebate service after it stopped working (1.5 years later), which caused me a big headache and a lot of money (for shipping). I just wanted to share my experience so someone else doesn't have to go through the headache. But on the other hand you are more than saving what it would cost to send it back in on rebate at a cost of $300. It's all a personal call really.

I'd second Parstron comments regarding Hitachi rebadges.
If this CTX is Hitachi rebadged, it oughtta be a HOT deal @ $299.

My $.02

I've got this monitor, have had it for almost a year (I got it from my boss for like $300) It's ok, haven't seen them anywhere else though. I'm happy with it, let me know if you need any specs from it. I'm running an ATI AIW128 16mb right now, Radeon ViVo is on the way.

Do you find the monitor to be dim? The Macworld review I read listed the image quality etc as "Fair" which I think is the middle rating, but it said the monitor was dim at 18 footlamberts (sounds like a fungus ) Do you find the monitor dim? What lighting conditions are you using it in? What do you use your monitor for?

I haven't played games in a while, but I played some NHL EA Style, the Sims, Vampire the Masquerade, Final Fantasy 7, and then just basic web browsing. I'm happy, I mean, 21" for $300, and I hate trinitron's b/c of the two lines. I run at 1024x768 85hz 32bit color. Seems ok to me

I don't find it dim, and in fact, when I installed Adobe Photoshop the gamma program had me adjust it to make it less bright, so, if I used it correctly (I ignored the gamma correction) it would be dim I guess. I'm not dim, really...
