We had one in Olde Towne Manassas. It was called Persnickity Cakes. It went out of business.

The WSJ reports that Crumbs, a 50-store chain of cupcake stores, has gone under. Apparently it was the most prominent of the cupcake industry stores.

Did anyone actually think that cupcakes alone would make a sustainable business model? I'm actually surprised they lasted this long.

From IPO to out of business in 3 years. Flavor of the month, indeed.

I only ever once went to the gourmet cupcake place. They were expensive a hell for the small cupcake. Sorry but I'm not paying that kind of money for a small as a cupcake.

Honestly old fashioned plain is the only kind of donut I like. Preferably fried, and freshly fried at that.

Me too. Cake donuts have always been my favorite, but as I've aged, my tastes have evolved to the point where I only enjoy plain cake / old fashioned. Perfect amount of sweet for me.

I have a sweet tooth but I want my candies to be sweet and cupcakes to be sweetened, not mode of sugar.

there's a fine line... I've got the biggest sweet tooth in the world, but I've literally spit out cake at my sister's house because it was so sweet. felt like diabetes in my mouth.

I never thought of Crumbs as particularly sweet, though. the cake itself was dry, but the frosting was average.

there's a local cupcake shop by me that seems to do really great business. their cupcakes are slightly bigger than the ones you might make at home, and I think they charge like $3.99 for them (maybe $4.99 for a daily special)... I don't think it's the cupcake fad that doomed Crumbs, but rather expanding way too quickly with a purely mediocre product.
