Did you watch the same video? I didn't see it removing stuff "all over the body." Only a specific tumor that was injected.

Even the article i read just mention that specific type of brain cancer... and this method of using "oncolytic diseases" is very common. It's just each of the small to larger companies focus on specific targeted cancers using specific diseases.

Man, i always love reading your posts.:wub::thumbsup:

This. Gibsons knows his stuff, often generally, but definitely about a lot of the more in depth science like this and he's typically been the voice of reason and can explain things more specifically. He's (or she I guess, since I just realized I don't actually know, not that it matters either way though) like the biology version of Rubycon (knowledgeable in general, but can really get into the nitty gritty technical stuff, and does so without being caustic/abrasive).

Actually there's a couple of others on here (zinfamous and there's one that has a Wisconsin Badgers avatar, I want to say his username is gigantopithecus?) that know a lot about topics like this that I'm thankful for people like that (both for the real work they do, but also to help combat the ignorance that bubbles up from time to time).

I cringe and feel sorry for them reading some of the shit they see get posted from people like TexasHiker and eits and some others (like some of the anti-evolution people) who regularly bastardize this stuff (doubly so with some of the ones that are just returning trolls as they tried to seriously reason and have discussions with them but since they're just trolls and have no real interest in changing their beliefs/opinions it just turns out wasted).

Good article. I like to read the "what it didn't mention" instead of the originals because they typically contain more accurate information in addition to the cliff notes of the original.

Yeah.

60 Minutes isn't too bad, but I tend to prefer PBS. Frontline I feel like generally does a better job of covering topics. Not sure if they have any about this specifically (although we've had a few threads over similar developments I recall so I would guess they probably have some), but they've had some good in depth episodes on quite a few that are kinda related (like vaccines, Ebola, antibiotic resistant strains) the past couple of years. I think PBS actually has a big multi-episode series devoted just to cancer that's set to air sometime soon and I'm sure things like this will be part of it.

Oh and someone mentioned Vice and they have some good stuff too although theirs is more roughshod usually.

Yes. This forum is a better place with members like Gibsons and Zinfamous. We also value DrPizza and his enthusiasm for science.

Some of the most interesting research out there.

Yes there is, but we shouldn't lose the forest for the trees. Public funding of applied research is great (and seems to get a lot more attention on the web), but we shouldn't be sacrificing basic research, such as trying to understand the molecular basis of a disease or how proteins function in a cell, to fund it. Lots of great discoveries and new technologies have worked their way out of problems encountered and phenomena discovered in the course of basic research.

 Agree wholeheartedly with everything you said. One reason I remain here, because there are some very knowledgeable folks who cover the gamut of topics, and they do so much to combat the ignorance or misguided or gullible individuals, some of which I imagine just do not care to spend time researching.

I think that ANY virus or disease on this planet has some cure out there in nature waiting to be discovered. problem is where to look for it? A harmless insignificant plant in some rain forest in the world could hold the cure to some illness or disease once analyzed and studied in the lab.

Using a virus to cure cancer,...

,... sounds like a great idea!!

All buffoonery aside, no really, sounds like a great idea.

I always liked the idea of I am Legend/Omega Man/Last Man on Earth, assuming I was the last man.

Been following news since I first read about using "virus" that only attack and help kill cancer cell 10 years ago... they finally revealed that it is a re-engineered Polio Virus...

There's a good dozen or so oncolytic viruses that have been worked on. Polio is just one of them.

There are a lot of unique small molecule compounds and other biologicals (eg: therapeutic proteins) in nature and remain undiscovered, but I'd put little faith in the certainty that a cure exists already somewhere in nature.

Regardless, there is still so much we don't know about how cancers and viruses work at the molecular level. Understanding how proteins specifically interact with one another is just as important as discovering some cool new compound that works on a petri dish. If we can understand the former, there is the possibility of using rational design to help move drug discovery forward.

Yeah. His implication is that this is an inspiring example of what cures might be "found" by chance in "nature."

This was actually an example of meticulously re-engineering nature.
