Current choice of CPU coolers

TRUE Copper This one is just too damn expensive.

Thermaltake Big Typhoon This one states it is for older cpu's, but it does say socket 775. Would this work with Core 2's ?

Zalman I like this one quite a bit. But what if the fan fails ? Can it be replaced ?

TRUE Seems to be the best so far.

Any opinions on these coolers ?

After looking at a thousand reviews, I think I will just go with the standard TRUE and get a high quality fan.

yeah, there's also something to be said for having 4+ pounds hanging off the side of your motherboard. That's not a HSF for a tower-style case. At least not in my book.

See OP.

Does the Thermaltake Big Typhoon work on newer CPU's such as the Wolfdales ? I know it is for Socket 775 but the compatibility states mostly older cpu's.

Based on this review here.

The TRUE will fit the motherboard I ordered just fine. Because, well....the motherboard they show it on is the one I ordered.

Never been a fan of Thermaltake.

- TRUE with the intention of lapping CPU and cooler. This is generally considered the best 775 air cooling, but is the most expensive. Without lapping, there is a lot of variation between TRUE results.
- HDT cooler like Xigmatek 1283 (dual) 1294 (quad) or Core Contact Freezer or OCZ vendetta 2 or other HDT coolers.
- Arctic 7 cheapest, not quite up to the HDTs, but not far behind.

The HDT coolers generally trail the TRUE by a very small margin, but are in the range of $25-40 with fan, while the TRUE is more in the range of $50-60+ PLUS fan. They are considered the best performance value (while an Arctic 7 is the best dollar value)

The other options are for quiet / low flow situations and those are things like the Thermalright tower, or Scythe ninja / ninja mini, but most people here don't need things THAT quiet. I have a Xigamtek 1283RS, and the fan at full speed is not bothersome, but it's not silent and some people need silent.

Gotta love the Tuniq Tower. Don't get the Zalman. For that price, you could get something better.

I have used True standard model and it has kept my older B0 stepping Kentsfield overclocked to 3.2ghz under load under 50c...I am sure on a newer stepping G0 quad or a newer yorkfield it can do that with a a higher 3.4-3.5ghz range....

I do like to couple my TRUE's with Antec Tri-cool 120mm fans....I also use fan controllers in all of my boxes to get the best fan speed at the audible range I like...

Yea, I agree that the Tuniq Tower is a good cooler, and I would like to have it.

But on this page they state there are issues with the Tuniq.

As you can see, the northbridge and MOSFET coolers do not interfere with the Thermalright Ultra-120 heatsink and should not have any compatibility issues with most popular CPU cooler. Having said that, we have seen some third-party pictures indicating that the mounting bracket on Tuniq Tower 120 comes into contact with the northbridge cooler, so keep that in mind.

So although the Tuniq is great, I think the TRUE would be just the better choice since it fits cleanly.

I have the ACF7pro on my G0.....however I'm not into bleeding edge of stability when clocking....3Ghz @ <48 100% is good enough for me...

The Tuniq Tower is ok, but it is damn heavy. There are newer coolers that are lighter and cool better for the same price.

If you get an intel server system the heatsink actually bolts to the motherboard backplate, so the true copper would do fine. Other than that, I wouldn't touch it with a long stick, even for horizontal use.

Being the owner of a Tuniq Tower, Big Typhoon, Xigmatek HD-S1283, Noctua NH-U12P, and an Enzotech Extreme-X, i'd say (depending on your case) go with the Xigmatek for the price.
The Big Typhoon will work on a S775, though, to answer your earlier question.

And if you're going to get one of these "wide load" coolers you might also want to consider getting one of the bolt-through mounting kits. They help distribute the load more evenly over a larger area and provide better support for the back of the motherboard.
