Yes, I have decided on the Thermalright Ultra 120. I plan to overclock so I figure it will be essential. Plus the fact that I know it already fits the board without issue, unlike the Tuniq Tower from that review.

Now the issue remains of deciding what fan to install on it

I would not through out the Scythe Ninja...great price, decent weight and outstanding performance.

Hello everyone.

For my full-size rigs, I've become a big fan of Noctua coolers & fans. I have a 12UF that is going into my Nehalem build. Noctua's products are very well made, extremely well-engineered & their performance is right up there in every test & review. Noctua's a really cool company to deal with as well. Right now, they're offering a free I7 adaptor kit for all current owners. That's great customer support.

They're a bit harder to find and cost a bit more, but they're worth it IMHO.

wow, yeah, that's a great deaal. I have an S1283 also, it's a good cooler, TRUE seems to be slightly better, but if you have less than an e8400, it doesn't make sense. I mean the cost difference between that S1283 and a TRUE is the cost difference between an e7200 and an e8400. you're better off with the e8400 and S1283 over the TRUE and an e7200.

I have a True and love it, really does a great job of cooling my cpu, even under Linpak testing, never goes above 60 C. Never lapped it either.

I have a True Extreme and love it. I wonder why Egg does not list it for sale?

another good cooler that you can get is the thermaltake V1, avalable for both LGA1366 and 775 (the 1366 version isnt quite as good though, but its $20 cheaper), and the Coolermaster V8. the V8 is relatively new, and as such newegg doesnt have it yet. they only just got the copper V1 in stock in the last few days. you cal always just order them direct from the company though. http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16835106102

They've had an occasional winner, such as the Sonic Tower and the Big Typhoon(s) when they first came out. The Big Typhoon is still among the best down-blowing coolers, IMO.

I have a feeling that the current top end air coolers will become average coolers with Core i7. The new socket is a bit larger which gives more room for companies making i7-only coolers (versus universal supporting older sockets). Hopefully some companies will take advantage of this and maybe make a tower heatpipe unit that is even bigger than the current ones.

Why I say current coolers will be average i7 coolers is that the i7 can draw a HUGE amount of power. I've had a Kill-a-Watt on my test i7 965 and I've never seen another single CPU setup draw near that much power on load versus idle.

A lot of it is snake oil, like those crazy diamond TIMs. I use Shin-Etsu X23-7783D and it's performed exceptionally well... only $5 /gram at my local PC shop.

Best and cheapest cooling solution currently available, and for only $23 +/-

nothing better out there dollar for dollar. I can't believe that air coolers have broken the $1-- mark...ridiculous.

Best I can figure is that people want performance as close to as what water cooling can give, but they don't want to accept the challenges involved.

At least the fierce competition for these extreme air coolers has brought awesome price/performance solutions that make an upgrade to such a cooler almost a no-brainer even for those against investing in after market cooling to begin with.

Yea, I decided on the TRUE Black. No particular reason for it though, mainly because it is black

Shouldn't heatsinks come ready to install out of the box? I mean...what's the point of forking out 70 bucks on a heatsink that you're gonna have to mess around with for 2 hours trying to get the base to be flat?

Thermaltake Big Typhoon This one states it is for older cpu's, but it does say socket 775. Would this work with Core 2's ?

Zalman I like this one quite a bit. But what if the fan fails ? Can it be replaced ?

TRUE Seems to be the best so far.

Any opinions on these coolers ?

For the Zalman, I've ordered a replacement fan since the original one I had (Non-NT) wasn't 4 pin, and I wanted PWM. I think I got the fan from Performancing-pcs or something. Check on internet, its definitely available.
