Definitely YMMV in the ATL. Tried both HSI (match Bellsouth's new $32.95 DSL plan) and cable (Dish's recent $19.99 promo), got shot down on both. Didn't try threatening disconnect w/supervisor, but I was talking to retention dept. and they just didn't budge.

I'm just whining since I work as a ComCast internet tech support rep and have to deal with billing $hat all day anyway. Even better, there are no supervisors in today, yay!

So if we call in and ask for you, you'll hook up an ATOT brother, right?

46 bucks a month for HSI and they can't be bothered to run promos for current customers. I hate comcast.

Wish I could...but we are under a ton of scruitiny here, I'm no longer even allowed to abuse my email access rights.

With over 3 million customers and over 1.6 million modems, of course comcast can't afford to offer lower prices, especially when they can't even keep the speeds within any sort of an acceptable range of their advertised speeds...and the 40GB cap doesn't help much either.

Maybe so, but in the end, all it will do is lead to their eventual demise once FIOS becomes more widespread.

FIOS isn't coming everywhere and it won't be the prices you are seeing now.

I was in a "test" area for cable in 1998(?), and it only cost $13.95/month while testing. Now it is at like $50.

I have had Comcrap for the past 10 months. I get wayyyy more disconnects in a day than I did with 3 years on DSL. But I cant get the higher speeds of DSL. When i call ComCrap's tech support; they just brush me off and say "We can't do anything on the phone, and we will send a tech over, but if it is not our fault we will charge you." WTF kind of response is that?

Which is the reason why I refuse to get Comcast. When FIOS comes to Northern California hopefully there will be heated competition between SBC, Comcast and Verizon, which should lower prices. $46 + for Cable Internet is too much.

Can I kick you in the groin? Seriously. Every time I get a service outage, they direct me to you guys and you make me go through the same crap making me describe my network settings to you until I hang up or my phone battery dies. WHY CAN'T YOU JUST ADMIT THE SERVICE IS DOWN AND TELL ME HOW LONG YOU EXPECT IT WILL BE BEFORE IT IS FIXED?!

So how do you like working at Stream anyway? I quit their lousy-ass company after 6 months of getting crap pay (well below area average for a call center) AND getting being told that my pay would go down when I wanted to switch to part time.

They lowered mine to $29.99 to match the DSL price in our area. I too would like to see a bottom tier price. 1.5Mb for $20, 3Mb for $30, 6Mb for $40 and 8Mb for $50 would be awesome. They could sign up a lot more people with a plan like that.
I'll be switching to FIOS if they price it at $30 like they claim they're going to.

Since an, admitted, Comcast rep is on the post I have a question.

"If I call in asking for a retention specialist, instead of being directed to one, does the retention specialist know?"

The reason I wonder is because I, obviously, look a little more 'cheap' if I am asking for the retention guy, instead of being directed. So I didn't know if the rep informs the Specialist or just hits the transfer button.

Note: I'm in the Aurora IL area and for 25 months I've only paid full price like 4 months. As the OP said it's YMMV, but a simple 10 minute phone call every 6 months or so has saved me $25-$35 a month for 20+ months. Heck the last time I played the game I had the audacity to ask the retention specialist, who had already given me 1/2 off for 6 months on HSI, and I quote:

"So is there anything else I can get deal wise?"
She responded with 'Oh, well how about a free digital movie channel for 6 months?'

So I got all 10 HBO channels for free for 6 months. *shrug* Call them, it doesn't hurt, and you can apply the $100+ in savings to the 2005 or 2405 you know you are getting from Dell anyway.

Called them yesterday and could only get them down to 37.95 per month for "4mbps" (according to the rep) service. I wasn't even aware that Comcast offered 4 mbps - I thought it was 3.

Also, My effing cable has been down for the past two days and has been spotty for the three weeks before. I had Verizon DSL for two years and literally NEVER turned it off - I had one 6-hour outage in that time. WTF Comcast?

Don't work at Stream... I work at a Canadian Call Centre called NuComm, getting paid $10CAD/hour, no premiums at all even though my shift is 3:30PM-12AM, Fri-Tues. It really sucks with the taxes here in Ontario as well...I barely make 650 a paycheck working full time.

The retention/sales rep would usually only know if the person you were talking to before hand wasn't lazy and actually mentioned it to the rep(unless their IVR is well designed)...otherwise, it just looks like you want to downgrade or disconnect, and the rep is more likely to offer something, as they get paid through commission as well as hourly.

Wow, another great day in the neighborhood. The $19.99 deal is no joke easy, especially when you mention the Yahoo DSL $14.99 for a year deal (http://promo.yahoo.com/sbc)

Serious YMMV:
After getting my rep to offer the Internet deal I asked if any TV packages might be available. Lo and Behold... the offer

On-Demand Silver Package
6 months $48.98
7 thru 9 $74.98
10 thru 12 $99.98
13th month+ $114.94

Includes:
High Speed Internet
HBO
On Demand
Digi channels galore
AND a free cable box (no monthly fee)

Homey arrives Thursday morning for the install, keep in mind the above rates aren't in a contract so after 6 months the game begins anew. Considering when I called them my monthly bill was $62 for Internet and BASIC, 30 channel, cable, I'd say woot

It's more than likely due to crappy cabling in the house. Remove all splitters and try running a high end line to the modem.

I was considering going back to DSL with SBC?s $14.95/mo offer. But getting the line provisioned the 1st time was difficult and it looked like I was gonna have to go thru the same bologna again.

Comcast rep offered me 6mos for $29.99 and 10 seconds of awkward silence raised the offer to 12mos @ 29.99 (have my own modem). Not bad but would like Comcast to offer tiered service as 1.5meg is fine for me.

Worked for me. After telling me that Comcast was increasing to 6Mbit inbound in September, the retention agent reduced my monthly to $24.95 a month for the next 6 months.

Thanks for the tip!

Well, I didn't have any promotional discounts for the last few years, so I decided to give it a shot. And like Addy, they offered me $29.99 for 12 months... Its too bad we don't have SBC over here in Washington to offer some competition. Other than some short promotions, prices have been static around $40 for quite a while.

It will work fine at the same address. All that matters is that the SIN/Name hasn't had a promo in 6 months. Most agents don't bother paying attention to the name/SIN that has been on the account previously. And as an added bonus, you might get a retention save when you go to cancel your service.

Do they charge an installation/activation fee every time you sign up? I am thinking about doing this with my gf, but I forget whether there is any sort of activation fee...

There is going to be an installation charge every time of course. But if you get lucky, the agent might waive it for you. Gotta subscribe to a hella large amount of services of course. Install is only from 20-50USD though, so it's not so bad when you save 100+ on your services
