New season started tonight on The History Channel. Anybody find this story/history of this treasure hunt fascinating?

i know the diver they find to go down 200+ feet in a 8 foot wide hole flooded then transition into a 27 inch hole at the bottom and descend another 40 feet to a under water cavern has balls of solid steel.

I find the Oak Island mystery fascinating because I vividly remember reading the same Reader's Digest article that the brothers cite as their inspiration. That said, the show itself has been very disappointing. Way too much speculation and way too little revelation.

There's bound to be something valuable down there, but it just will not easily be obtained. Every single panelist on the special last night agreed that it will not be unearthed this year, maybe next.

The mystery itself is interesting, but the faux reality show around it really isn't.

I want to like this show and do watch it when it's on, but it's like the buzzfeed of reality tv. Each episode has about 5 minutes of exposition and 40 minutes of hype

I've been interested in the money pit since I was a kid and watched this w/Leonard Nimoy

Never heard of it. I'll look it up on Hulu since I'm into reality shows.

One of my peeves though is when show producers want to preserve the mystery instead of revealing truth.

I watched the same thing and I've been interested in that mystery since I was a kid and read the readers digest articles.

The problem is, you already know that if they had actually found something major/interesting/valuable, it would be all over the news. So you know watching the show that each episode is just going to be more speculation, more "what if", more "it could be", more "is it possible..." etc, with no answers.

I'm still not sure which show is worse, Ancient Aliens or this show.

Completely different things. AA is not based on proof. Oak Island is factual, its real, there IS something in that pit, but two centuries of advancements in drilling and mining have not done a thing to crack that tough nut.

The pyramids were designed to protect the pharohs and their riches with traps, and sheer technological determination. But most of them were pilfered and robbed simply because they faced determined looters that didn't have to deal with being hundreds of feet underwater.

Oak Island benefits from having the pit sunk 230'+ into the ground, then submerged with multiple sea tunnels keeping it underwater. You can't drain an ocean, and divers cannot fit in the narrow second drill hole as it stands. Its the perfect place to hide some serious loot.

It may not be your cup of tea, it may have the same crappy Discovery channel format of leading/stringing you along with a reveal and then a long commercial break, but some day, someone will gain access to that pit, and I hope we are around to see what comes up.

^^question is the loot still there or is it like Geraldo Rivera's vault live show.

Something is still there. When you spend that much time protecting it, it is not easily looted. My pyramid example is correct. A pyramid is right there for the picking. 95% of our oceans remains unexplored. Reason is .. all that freakin' water !! This is not Capone's vault ... but it will take a fortune to make a fortune on Oak Island.

I watched this last night and have seen the previous 2 seasons. Someone needs to start a Kickstarter fund to rent that thing pictured in Squisher's post.

In the final episode of the second season, a sonar mapping device was lowered into a subterranean chamber over 200 feet (61 m) below the surface.
The device revealed that the chamber is roughly rectangular and contains at least two moderately large rectangular objects.

So they roughly know where that chamber is, what's stopping them from getting into it?

I love this show. Sure, there's a lot of repetition and cheesy hype, but that's what the ff button is for. I usually blow through the commercials and pick up maybe a minute into the next segment.

And they have made some interesting discoveries which they reviewed to some extent in the premiere. Things like the Spanish and Templar coins. And the season preview shows some more interesting stuff.

Btw, there's now a follow up show sort of like talking dead. It's called Oak Is. Drilling down or something like that.

I have watched all of the episodes so far, but was pretty pissed at the end of season 2 when I realized that they had not accomplished anything during season 2.

The fact that the pit is over 240' below the surface. The main shaft goes down to a much narrower 27" shaft that is full of rusting debris from the ladder used to descend the main shaft. As witnessed in the last show, a diver soon got hung up on that rusted metal in the narrow shaft and could not move. It is all underwater and is constantly fed from at least 2 underground shafts that overwhelm any pumps they try to use to drain the water out.

They've even tried to add dye to the water to find where it is being fed from so that they could try and block off the underground water source.

The consensus is that they need to widen the narrow 27" shaft to more closely match the wider main shaft. That will allow them to descend down without risk of getting caught in the debris. But with at least 40'+ of drilling that wide of an opening, it will take months to get that done.

@Sawyer. It is a fascinating read. So many theories, so many possibilities ... it really is an amazing story that I am hoping will end soon. Supposedly the pit is cursed and will only give up its secrets when seven people have died. That number stands at six, hence why the brothers on the show are very hesitant to allow anyone to do anything that the risks outweigh the reward.

Oak Island is factual, its real, there IS something in that pit,

The only things that are FACTS about that pit are:

1 - its filled with water
2 - men have spent over 200 years unsuccessfully trying to find something besides water

Its a good story.

Why don't they box it in with sheetpile, and just dig it out? It doesn't sound like an insurmountable problem using equipment built in the last century.
