So I sign up to a tourney of 180 people for $4+0.40....

lost everything on the 3rd hand... still made it to 160th place, which brings shame to my family if i was of japanese ancestry.

i mean, i win all the time playing against my friend.

but playing online, i'd have $10 bankroll, and that last for 4-5 hours and i'd still have about the same money... it is very hard to win, and i play fairly tight. i'd end up losing at the end of the night when i get tired.

i think there are too many good players on poker stars, where is another good place full of below average players?

I don't think online playing is anywhere close to playing ftf.

I think everyone cheats in online poker.. There's programs that just run alongside the poker programs to coordinate the mathematical correct action.

I think thats a myth, and if you truly understand the game of poker a program will never be able to beat you. A program cannot account for the psychological side of the game.

One word for you: Shills!

Avoid online poker like the plague. You don't know if you are playing against real humans, or casino plants, not to mention, that you have zero ability to read your opponents.

check sig, there are programs that people use to help them but at least party doesn't allow most of them and they also have checks to stop bots - popups that have you enter a word like you see on websites and theres more fish than stars

...and collusion is way too easy. all you have to do is play at the same table as your buds and have a conference call to tell each other your cards--tremendous advantage. But as long as people are willing to piddle their money away and it's legal, the gravy train will go on.

I've played over 350,000 hands of online poker and this is pretty much all false. Making reads is extremely important in online poker. There's much more to a read than just how they play with their chips.

I have to give you some credit bud. Most people, including many in this thread, always claim that "I lost so it must be rigged". I know a lot of people that play online poker who 1)don't use cheat/advice software, 2) don't collude, 3) aren't casino/site shills, and 4) make money. I'm not saying that none of the above exist, I think that some of them do; especially #2. My point is that there are enough bad/careless players out there that you can win.

Advice to the OP:
A. Read some good books. There is a lot of crap out there right now. A lot of "pros" who are trying to turn their newfound celebrity into some royalties. Start with "theory of Poker" by Sklansky.
B. Play more hands at lower stakes. There is no substitute for experience. As another poster stated, there are a lot of things you can "read" in online poker. Betting patterns is a biggie. You won't start recognizing these things until you play a LOT of hands.
C. Spend some time on good poker forums. Poker is one of the few things that has a ton of valuable information on the net. Because even if you read really bad advice, it can help you understand how some of your opponents are playing.

Disclaimer: It's not easy to win at online poker (or live poker for that matter). You have to beat the rake to make a profit. that means that if you are in the top 50% of players, you may still lose. Basically, you'll have to find a table where you are in the top 30% of players at THAT table. Then you'll have to survive the swings of luck.

Edit for clarification*

Although a great book, its not a good book to start with. Hold em' Poker by Sklansky is better to start with for a new person, then small stakes hold em, then by that time you will know which book to go to next...
Two great forums to visit are Flopturnriver.com and twoplustwo.com ..... Good luck and stay away from the 100nl tables for a while.
