They rank his game with those of Willis Reed, Kirk Gibson and Emmitt Smith. There is no way Schilling should be ranked with them. Schilling pitched a great game, but not up there with these guys.

eh, well i dont think you can rank it unless we get more medical information. Like if a doctor came out and said "Schilling shouldn't of even been able to walk" with whatever taht injury was, then yeah it's pretty damn gutsy. Don't forget initially most thought he wasn't going to pitch again this whole season.

With the information we have, all we can do is debate

They needed an excellent performance from him. If he pitches like he did in game 1, the series is over. However, he pitched 7 strong innings, bloody ankle and all. While I don't think it should have been 2 on the list of gutsiets performances, it definitely belonged on the list.

Edit: I can't spell.

Yeah, Sportscenter is terrible. If they weren't basically the only sports network, I wouldn't watch them. They used to be good, now they're garbage

Yea thats basically why I posted it. I have my doubts. I mean even after game 4 Francona said he looked good in his bullpen stint. It wasn't as if his was a game time decision. He was practicing all week and only after he passed through test did he go out. I understand it was a very gutsy performance, but definitely not up there with Reed and Gibson.

Well it wasn't a bloody ankle. It was stuff they put on it, kinda like an ointment IIRC.

No, I believe it was blood coming from the sutures he had put in.

This was definitely one of the most gutsiest performances:

They basically intentionally displaced his tendon closer to a bone and put sutures in both sides of it to hold it in place---that CAN'T feel good regardless.

He NEEDS surgery to get this fixed..this isn't like banging your head or a sprained knee.

He even said he felt like he didn't have much left in the 4th, yet survived for 7 innings to give the bullpen some relief.

He was HUGE

According to this article recapping the game, it was blood on his ankle.

how gusty exactly were the other performances? All I know about those are those videos that are always played; gibson's home run on his obviously injured leg or whatever. Can anyone give some background info on the situations?

It was blood....they gave him a shot in there.
Thats the foot where he pushes off when he pitches. How can you put down his effort??? That was an awesome performance given his condition......and he didn't blame his ankle for his poor performance in game 1.

Uh, everyone else did. They blamed his ankle for everything. I never said I'm putting down his effort. I'm saying they are making this sound like it was one of the greatest comebacks from an injury in the history of SPORTS. Like I said for those of you who can not read, Schilling pitched an amaing game, but its not #2 of gutsiest performances ever.

Sure, it ranks up there with those other 'gutsy' performances, IMO, especially when you take into account the position the team was in.

It definitely ranks up there..but also think of this:

Bernard King's playing in the finals while injured (I was too young for this)--basically he scored 4 points, but it was more of an inspiration

Gibson's HR on a bum leg -- clutch, but it was 1 (one) at bat

Schilling pitched 7 innings

I'm not saying it was the GUTSIEST, but it ranks as high as anything else

I agree it was a VERY gutsy performance and belongs up there on the list. He basically got them to game 7. Without him going the full 7 innings they would have been dead, the bullpen had nothing left after 2 loooooong games. Huge pressure on him regardless of the ankle and he delivered. FActor in the major ankle problem and it's gotta be way up on the list.

How can pitching like that with a bleeding ankle/dislocated tendon NOT be considered one of the guttiest performances ever? Yankees fans sure are dumb

maybe he should have logged onto ATOT and asked for medical advice before playing in the game...he could also have made a pol to see if we thought he is 'gutsy'

seriously though..the guy is in pain and still playes...id like to see you pansies go out there and play in that condition ..basically come through when it mattered for your team....
