Why is it American etailers are inflating the prices by ridiculous amounts, but in the EU, Aus/NZ and Asia, its sold at MSRP?

Does Newegg have free reign in their pricing scheme while other countries etailer does not?

I wanted to wait, but I could not. I am more than happy w/ my 780 purchase though (after selling my 7970 to buy it).

Best of luck to those who can wait this crazy cryptocurrency wave out

IIRC, Gigabyte custom PCBs are blue, but the one shown in the pic is black. Maybe just a reference PCB with a different cooler?

The $700 price tag for these custom R9 290x really doesn't make sense because the custom cards don't appeal to miners (sound/heat not a huge issue) - so they'll just go with a cheaper reference card and for the gamers the price tag is probably just going to make them go with a 780/Ti. Hopefully these price points don't last long.

Maybe NewEgg finally reached monopoly status as it's been threatening to got years? Or maybe mining hasn't taken off in other countries to the same extent?

Note: this post is wild speculation

In most other countries, electricity is more expensive, so your returns are much lower.
Plus the initial investment (at MSRP vs MSRP) would be higher due to taxes etc, so it's much less lucrative to mine in Europe/etc than in the US, because all of your costs are higher, but the returns are the same, so it takes longer to make a profit, and given how currently volatile and quite slim profits seem to be, it means it's not worth it.

Not true, because I used to live in Switzerland and France, dirt cheap electricity.

In Australia we pay $0.3 per kWh and its still highly profitable to mine, there's quite a few coins that still pays off a R290 within a few weeks.

Demand is crazy here, retailers and etailers are always out of stock, cards come in, sold instantly etc. But still at MSRP.

I'd love to consider upgrading some of my mining rigs to some 290s, but not at these current prices. It looks like I'm going to have to do it when mining is barely profitable at $0.10 rates again.

Just remember everyone - if you miss the next BTC/LTC bubble, just be sure to put your entire bank account into AMD cards. They'll go out of stock a month after the bubble starts, and you'll make at least 20% ROI.

This price gouging is getting out of hand. Screw Newegg.

They're not doing anything different from almost 100% of the retailers and e-tailers in the US.

It's not exactly a phenomenon localized to Newegg.

It's an american thing; while you have higher prices during high demand, you also get better discounts which we never see - like black friday, or the $200 4770k a few weeks ago.

That's the downside we get from living in a more "conservative" country.

Because, apparently, capitalism and the effects of supply/demand aren't illegal in the US yet. It sucks but that happens when miners buy cards in lots of 100s as soon as they're in stock even WHEN they're marked up by 100-150$.

The good news is, on average, compared to the rest of the world the US actually has it pretty good in terms of hardware prices. The US typically has better prices than EU and AU/NZ. But this whole mining thing has skewed graphics prices pretty heavily.

when at MSRP AU pricing vs US pricing has been very comparable in the last few years thax to the stupidly weak USD.

Did Gigabyte not seed reviewers with their 290/290x Windforce?

They are the only one purchasable in the US, so I have no clue why we have no reviews.

Last I checked, we're pretty damn capitalistic as well.

Only difference is our retailers and etailers seem to obey MSRP set out by AIBs and AMD. Newegg's markup is ridiculous but as long as people buy it.. meh. Sucks to be you guys relying on Newegg for hardware.
