Seems you missed the AIB launch projections that were embedded within that post :whiste:

You're going way off topic talking about market shares, your own personal opinions of AMD's failures, etc. that have nothing to do with the OP mentioning a rumored launch date.

Sorry for going off topic :whiste:

The rumored time is 2nd week of December with nothing confirmed from any official source. With Black Friday being 4 days away, it is safe to assume that nothing will be released in November. I guess we wait and see if something launches before Christmas.

Ditto, Unless I find a great deal on some 780s this Black Friday/Cyber Monday, I will be picking up 4 290s and building a custom water loop. At least the cost will still be blow that of 4 Titans :whiste:

That is a good idea, I'll keep an eye out for deals on 780's for the next week.

Second week of December would be fine, I hope this rumour turns out to be true, if they're not out 'til after Christmas I don't know what I'm going to do yet but I'm not happy about it.

Do you guys really expect the custom cards to be that much better in terms of noise/heat?

After looking at what Tom's said when they put a custom cooler from a 280X on the 290, it does look like there are a lot of benefits to be had. Not enough to make me wait, but still should be significant.

If the Arctic Accelero Xtreme III on overclockers.net is anything to go by... then it will a Monumental difference. That test show Temperature improvements of as much as 30 Degrees celcius in Furmark. I would say thats a massive improvement.

As for the noise that solution was noticeable quieter. Whether the AIB solutions can come close to that Aftermarket cooler is anyones guess but even close would make both the 290/290x MUCH more appealing.

A little snipet from a user on Overclockers forums. All credit goes to "Terminal Boy" for showing details on installation but here are lines 4-6 from his post.

"After 30 minutes of Heaven 4.0 with AX III:

4. GPU temp full load is down to 57 deg C from 95 deg C.

5. VRM1 temp seems to have increased by 2-3 deg C, so perhaps this is the one component that the stock cooler actually works well on.

6. VRM2 temp is down to 5o deg C from 84 deg C."

Seems to be darn incredible how much of a difference and how crappy the reference cooler really is.

30 degrees difference is ridiculous. You'd think amd would get it's act together and build a better card with a better cooler simply so that they could squeeze out more performance and charge more. As a company aren't they always in the red? Ridiculous.

I hear ya. I know they wanted to undercut Nvidia but even something slightly better would have been good. As long as the AIB solutions aren't too expensive we could be in for some amazing cards.

Kyle Bennett, founder of the HardOCP site, has posted on his forums that he has been told by AMD and three AIB card makers that custom 290 and 290x cards should be available online during the 2nd week of December. Kyle is well known so this info is more than an unsourced anonymous rumor. Of course, there's no guarantee cards will launch in the timeframe since there could be unforeseen delays but 2nd week of December appears to be the goal. Anyway, you can check out his post and the thread yourself:

Well one is the UK and one is the US. Do cards normally get released in both markets at the same time?

He's not talking about AIBs shipping date, he's talking about AMD shipping date of not fully assembled parts to AIBs.

Unless you imagine the AIBs assembling the cards all in 1 day and then overnighting the cards to US retailers by air from China, they ain't gun be here until January.

No.

Gibbo at overclockers.uk may be talking about that but Kyle is clearly and explicitly talking about sales availability to the public. From Kyle's post:

Just talked to AMD as well as three big AIB partners and AMD as well as one big AIB told me that we should expect to see custom R9 290 and 290X cards in etail the second week of December. FYI....

Who's right? I have no idea but it's clear Kyle is talking about public sales availability, not just shipment to AIBs.

I'd take the word of the one that's actually an e-tailer over a person obviously not as connected to the supply side of things.

Skurge also said the same thing, and he seems to have insider info on the supply side of things as well.

I don't care who you believe. The point is, there is a credible source of info out there - Kyle - who says he was told by both AMD and at least one AIB that custom cards will go on sale in December. Gibbo is a trustworthy guy but so is Kyle. I have no doubt both are accurately repeating what they've been told. Why do they have different info? I have no idea and I don't know who's right. You choose to discount Kyle, fine, but the reason you give for your skepticism makes little sense to me; unless you think he's lying or was lied to, he says he got his info straight from AMD and an AIB, two parties that are clearly "connected to the supply side of things." If Anand came on here and said the same thing, I'd give his word some credence because of his contacts and not simply dismiss it out of hand because he doesn't sell cards. Doesn't mean the info Kyle posted will prove to be right but his putting it out there - and saying he got it from AMD and an AIB - means it's more than an anonymous rumor.

With sufficient cooling, we would also be able to see a bigger performance disparity between the R9 290 and R9 290X.
