cut off the end of a floppy cable?

i have a floppy connector right here that i rounded... i took off all of the connectors in between the connector to the motherboard and to the floppy drive itself, but at the end is the big one that connects to the old 5 1/4 floppy drive things... can i cut that off and cover the exposed wire with electrical tape? any other suggestions?

Yep, just slice it off with a sharp knife right at the plug, I've done it with 80 pin ide cables with no ill effects.

be careful about removing the middle connectors- they jam into the cable and if you take them out exposes the bare cable which is at that point severed since you removed the connector, which acts as a bridge. also don't cut off the end where the cable's been twisted. otherwise though there should be no ill effects.

yep those middle connectors were a piece of crap to take off... ive never done it before so i didnt know how they were connector, and then i pried off the connector, and one of the little bridge things cut my finger thanks for the replies

I think what ZeroBurn is trying to tell you is if you remove the middle connectors, you might end up wiyh severed cables since the "little bridge things" act just like that - a bridge between one end of the cable and the other.

My old English teacher would slap me for a sentence like this...

i cut the end of my cables if i don't use them.

i don't slice my ata66 cables though. they're just too expensive ;-)

IDE is like $1 for a lot =) ;-)

you don't really have to cover the end, but you could if you wanted too.

Does anyone know of a place you can buy just bare cable, ends, connectors and such, so you can make up your own?

rat shack and the like. it's a tad expensive unless you plan on making quite a bit of cable. cause gotta buy a crimp and all.
