It's highly dependent on area. For my area:

Expanded Cable + 60mb Internet: $155
2x DVR boxes: $30
$185/mo

Now:
60mb Internet: $50
Netflix: $9
Amazon Prime: $8.25
Hulu+: $8
$75.25/mo

$109/mo Savings $1308/year

Now... That also doesn't speak to the fact that even with cable I had Netflix and Prime.

Also, my cable subscription above was nothing special. Basic expanded cable and two TiVo DVRs (which were cheaper than what was provided by my CC). I had no movie channels or any sports packages. The only lower package was Internet + Basic local channels in standard definition with no boxes.

$1300/yr, yeah it wasn't worth it for my family. I was actually the hold-out, my wife was the one pushing it. We are at a year now and I have not found a single reason to go back. Should also note that I use Bing Rewards to pay for Hulu so smack another $100 in savings on there if you want. If you'd like a referral, PM me.

This is my situation. Currently paying $160/mo for cable + internet, but would like to just pay the $60/mo for internet and get a HD antenna. Saving $100/mo is significant.

Wondering how you save $100/month when these days:

Bundled internet+tv ~= roughly $80/month in most localities

Or at a bare minimum...

Standalone internet ~= roughly $60/month in most localities
Netflix = $8/month
Total ~= $68/month

Total savings per month ~= $12/month

Things get worse when you decide to add in other services such as Hulu, HBO streaming, Amazon, etc. When it's all said and done cutting the cord can end up costing you more than a tv+internet bundle from your local provider, with a lot more integration hassles.

For us after the 12 month offer TV+ Internet shot up to $168(with all taxes the DVR and modem) and that was without premium channels

Now our bill is Netflix $8 + TWC internet with our own modem is $53 so we are saving $107 a month from what they were charging before.

If they would charge $89.99 and not raise it after a year and not have box, modem, this and that fees and then lump on the mountain of taxes to bring it up to almost double I would still have it.

Go for it if you don't like it you can always go back. I got the antenna and coax from Amazon for around $70 and went from the attic to were the cable used to come into the house and that was it... took me about an hour and we are getting around 54 channels now OTA.

I'd drop cable TV tomorrow if I could, but my wife is a heavy TV watcher. My solution? She pays the cable bill.

Welcome. It's not as bad as it seems. I do really miss sports and in particular sports center. But I will tell you neither my wife nor I thought it would be this easy. Netflix and Amazon Prime paired with either a Roku or Fire Tv/Firestick of some sort - you do quite well. You can watch the highlights on any of the apps: NBA has one, Sportcenter has one, NFL Network, etc. We get OTA local channels for the 6 major networks and Bob's your uncle. It's been a year now.

Fire TV/TV Stick plus xbmc=the best

How hard was it to put XBMC on the Fire stick. I don't consider myself a power user but can root a nook (sometimes) for example. I have 2 so I'd like to try it.

I haven't had a TV for years, had a TV tuner for my PC though. Now I'm quitting cable since it's not free in my new apartment. Only going to HBO Nordic, Netflix, dr.dk, and tv2 play.

Guess I was wrong. Looks like you got it figured out. Cut that cord and let us know how it goes. No cheating though. Torrents, Usenet, DDLs, and IRC are off the table.

If that episode of HelixS2E1 airs you got to purchase it. Even if you just want to "check it out" to see if its good.

That isn't cheating.

probably not long into the distance when the cord cutting crew overtakes the righteous atheist as most look at me annoying.

Ah yes the cord cutters secret.

Have you decided yet Rossman? Do you think streaming video is enough for you? $72 ain't bad. I paid $99 when my subscription ended.

I'll probably cut the cord eventually because:

1) $ savings $
2) spend more time doing other stuff

Supposedly the Amazon deal is live now, just need to find my Amazon cc.

I already pay Charter (The Devil) $53 a month for 60Mb internet!

That's a bargain. I pay Comcast $78.95 per month for 50 Mbps service. When/if they double the speeds in my area, as they've been saying they'll do, then I can drop down a tier and I'll still be paying $66.95.

So far, so good! Plenty of TV shows to watch via Netflix/Amazon. Internet still keeps me busy for the most part, anyway Discovered I can watch the local news on my phone whilst I get ready for work in the morning, too.

Generally speaking, what kind of content one gets from Amazon Prime that is not available from Netflix? Isn't the overlap pretty big?

Personally Amazon Prime streaming is only one of several perks that I look forward to taking advantage of.

Edit: Freaking URL filter. Go to gizmodo.com scroll down to the Amazon $72 deal.

Question: What do cord cutters do for morning news? My favorite is CNN Headline News; it ain't there. Is it available live through the CNN web site? I can get radio and audio-only versions of Fox News on Roku and I can deal with that and NPR, but I'd like to stay with Headline News if practical.

I pay VZ just shy of $87/mo, for TV + 25MBit/sec symmetrical internet. It would cost nearly the same for "just internet". The crazy thing is, I don't even watch the TV. And I pay $12/mo for the "HD" set-top box.

Uh, most OTA stations run morning news?
