No sightings by me.
I spend a lot of time walking in Manhattan, so it's a possibility at least.

why:
to see the interaction between an inanimate object with a goal and humans, to see how humans interact on a social level with the little robots.

That thing's slooooooow.

It's like an 8" Walmart shopper :^D

Very cool idea. I'm amazed it hasn't been stomped yet.

Again, why?

While I agree that it's interesting and smile-inducing, you really haven't given an answer to why it's a great social experiment. You don't explain why it's good to see how humans interact with these little robots or what practical applications (either to psychology or robotics) it might have.

I don't necessarily disagree with you here, I just wanted to point out that your answer is incomplete at best.

And, just so I don't come off as a complete curmudgeon, I'll admit that if I came across one of these little guys, I'm sure I'd end up talking to it just like the person mentioned on the website. Meeting one of those little robots would certainly be a bright spot in my day.

A lot of people would have done that, except for fear that *someone* is watching.
I think it's a cute project, and wouldn't have stolen it.

LOL, but it would look cuter running along your living room.

I think this is an excellent psychology experiment, or at least the beginning of one. For example, New Yorkers have a reputation (whether true or not) for being rude/unhelpful, but so far the results of this experiment seem to contradict that idea. It would be interesting, from a psychological and socioeconomic perspective, to repeat this experiment with a number of trials in different parts of the city or even in different cities/countries, to see if the locality influenced how helpful people were to the robots. It would also be intriguing to vary the robot appearance, i.e. what if it didn't have the happy face?

living in New York, it always seems like people are detached and always rushing off to do their own thing. This experiment demonstrates a touch of humanity in the New York population.

I don't think I could stand watching that robot bumble along. I'd have to pick it up and carry it to it's destination :^D

Very cute. I'd have pointed in the right direction... Or into traffic, I dunno, it would depend greatly on my mood at the exact instant of contact. From where I am now, both seem equally likely.
