I purchased this player recently and have experienced the problem of playing DVDs in progreesive scan mode. I have it hooked up to Sony KP-65WV700 HDTV and when playing a movie that has a bright picture or explosion the picture skews/bends to the left and also I see a lot of scan lines when there is fast motion happening on the screen. I have emailed their support detailing this problem. I hope this can be resolved with a firmware upgrade otherwise its going back.

There are others who have also come across this problem and being discussed at nerd-out.com.

These days even some of the cheapest DIGITAL RCA 32" and 36" TVs come with a YPrPb component input.

According to RCA:
Question: What is a YPrPb with Audio Connection? Article #1953*
A. Allows for connection of regular-or progressive-scan DVD players or component-output cable boxes.

The documentation for the cyberhome states:
Component Video Connectors
Y, Pr & Pb connectors for use with TVs
compatible with Component Video and/or
Progressive Scan Video.

To me it looks like putting a square peg in a square hole.

Spending an extra few bucks on the progressive scan would be win-win as long as the TV has the YPrPb component inputs.

Unfortunately I'm not buying my new TV until after Xmas, so I'll have to wait until then if the book larnin corresponds with real life.

Here is a great progressive scan tutorial

This player doesn't seem to do that well in SVCDs., so SVCD and this = no-no.

not that I have this player or anything, just from reviews

i have this player, and it plays vcd/svcd perfect. i dont know what others are talking about. But then again I am not making my own svcd's. The people having problems must not be making they right or something, or using bad media.

It's back on sale, the 500 model, for $119 - 50 instant - 20 mir + tax, = 50+tax after said and done.

The 400 is also on sale, for $69 - 20 MIR, so, same price, less features.

I saw this on my local bestbuy as an open box a week ago and for $30!!! I was debating whether to get it or not cuz I have 5 dvd players(Pioneer DTS decoding, Toshiba 3 DVD, Aiwa 3 Dvd, Apex 3 DVD, Daewoo - Hackable) already. Now that I read all the comments about it. I regret it and when I went back, it was gone!

I bought both the model 400 (non-progressive) and the model 500 (progressive) online while they were onsale. The model 400 is now in the bedroom and works fine. A nice cheap player that can be made region free via remote.

The model 500 was returned to BB first chance I got. What a POS player. In order to activate the component video inputs you have to hook it up via the REGULAR inputs and "activate" the component vid inputs. Then you unplug the regular inputs and plug in the regular inputs. What a pain! Then you have to make another menu selection to activate progressive mode.

My TV is HD-ready and does 480p from a progressive signal or upconverts any other signal to 720i so I was pretty psyched to check out progressive mode. But prog. mode had a lot of problems. One was at the top of the screen there was this weird purplish halo. Another was that when playing a DVD the screen would display a blank, black frame every few seconds.

In any case you get what you pay for. At some point I'll probably pick up a name brand prog. scan DVD player. For now though, watching interlaced scans in line-doubled 720i mode looks pretty damn sweet ...

Basically, the only reason to buy a Cyberhome is if you need a region free player and can't find anything else cheaper. Definitely stay away from the more expensive prog. scan model as I doubt you will be able to get prog. scan mode to work.

I bought a 500 at BB a couple of weeks ago for 69$
The interlached picture was ok but the progressive one was pretty bad (way worst then the interlached one).
I contacted cyberhome tech support and got an answer in less then 24h.
They told me to mail the unit to them and they will fix it, since they are aware of the problem and have a fix for it.
Instead i took it back to BB, return it, and bought a new one for 69$ -20$MIR=49$, and i made sure that the unit was manufactured in september instead of august (they had some of each at BB).
Took it at home, connect it and test it, and the progressive picture is pretty good.
Look to me that the quality control does not exist, and it is luck to get one that work fine.
One more thing i did upgrade to the new firmware.
BTW first post for me.

There should be a label on the box which indicated the date of mfg.
...russ

bb has been playing games with me on this item. Ordered 3 weeks ago and nothing; yet people keep getting them at local bb's.

A good deinterlacing chip to build a decent one costs more then $80

Why not? I'm willing to believe it until I try it. It's like saying "why would anybody believe that they can make a good CD player under $50". Well, yeah, they can ;-)

But in this case, and for the moment being, apparently you are right. Oh well, at least Best Buy is really good about returns.

Becasue Cd technology has been around and mainstream longer then progressive scan DVD tech which is hardly main stream right now, hence the higher costs of good components.

Progressive DVD players prices have dropped tremendously the past 2 years. The top sub $250 player (Panny and a couple of others) were in the 4-500 range 2 years ago. HIghquality progressive and sub $100 wont be here until HD DVD is sorted out and rolled out.

from what i hear, the progressive scan doesn't work that well on this
but the svcd, vcd, mp3, etc plays real nice on it
i have it but no progressive scan tv to test it out on, but i've tried the rest

I also was not able to get this dvd player to sync with my DLP projecter in either progressive or interlaced mode via components. Anyone know if this is a problem with the DVD player?

This DVD player is defective from the factory. I (and many other people) shipped back the player to get a replacement one. There is a hardware issue with the progressive scan. If you select the P-scan option from the video menu it may/will permanenetly mess up the player's output quality. What's messed up is that I had to pay $20 to ship it to them...
